Working while in school

I was just wondering about how everyone dealt with working and going to school. My first semester for nursing starts in a few short weeks and the company I work for ( been here 9 yrs) will not work with me schedule wise. Because I am not available 40 hours ( I can do 33 hours which is still full time per there HR dept) my manager just informed me, he can not work around my class schedule. I filled out all the proper forms and let him know 30 days prior and never thought he won't work with me schedule wise. I really don't know what to do, he asked what I was going to do. Quit school or quit work? I beside myself, I need my job but I worked so hard getting where I am now and finally getting into nursing school.Has anyone else had situations like this? What did you do?

I had to quit my job in my fourth semester. When I was hired, they promised to work around my schedule. Then, when push came to shove, they basically tried to "force" me to continue working full time. So I put in my two weeks and didn't look back.

Of course, that was only maybe 8 weeks before graduation, not right before nursing school. Maybe you could look into a job in a hospital where you could work prn?

I did not work while in school and I see students who do work that are struggling and sometimes fail. I took the minimum amount of loans needed to get by and cut back on spending. I think it's better to stay in school because even if you have to take out loans, you will be in a better position when you finish. You can find a PRN position and pick up when school is slow.

Don't do it. Quit work, if you really can't, then try to get your CNA ASAP if you don't already have it and work out a weekend arrangement with a facility.

Working while in school is possible if you are good at time management. I am about to start my third semester of nursing and I worked during the last year. Last semester I took 17 hrs and worked about 25. I would recommend only doing part time and definitely not working the night before clinical. I also would take a day or two off before finals or if I had several tests that week. You're the only one who can tell if it's too much. If your grades start to suffer then I would quit working.

It's not really about being to much to take on I guess, it's my works inability to work with me. I have no idea if school and work will be to much at this point, I hope not I have had a job since I was 12. Not working would seem so weird to me, a lot of unknowns at this point and it's making me crazy

Right. You can't really tell until you begin but I wouldn't quit school for any job.

Quit your job, school is more important. I am in a similar position, as my job will not let me go down to part time and give me the weekends I need. I am quitting at the end of the year so I can start the program in January. Until then I am going to see if I can get a part-time weekend job while I am in school. Just give them enough notice and leave on good terms.

I don't really see that you have any options unless you're considering dropping your spot in NS. You have to quit.

Yeah, they are making it difficult at work to remain there. I still need my job and income. But I will not pass up this opportunity.

I would start looking for a new job that is willing to work around your school schedule

Great news! My work just opened a part time position at another location ( which is also closer to home) and they are letting transfer there, so happy!
