Where to buy a good stethoscope?

  1. I want to purchase a good stethoscope. I know I have had mild hearing loss. I wouldn't even know I had any loss if I hadn't had a hearing test after a series of ear infections. It's nothing significant and I haven't really had any problems doing blood pressures with a good stethoscope, but have had problems with the cheap ones. I haven't worked in a few years so I haven't used one in forever and the one I had last time wasn't all that great, but not bad either. Anyway any suggestions would be appreciated.

You might want to check out www.stethoscopesplus.com

They have a directory of several companies that offer the major brands. I was able to look at several companies at once and compare prices.

I just got my DRG Puretone Cardiology in the mail.
I did research on them, and they seem to be superior to Littmann.
The ear tubing is more comfy (it contains gel) and the tubing won't harden as easily over time.

The only thing I don't like is the way the tubing is shaped, but that is just an aesthetic, it doesn't interfere with usage. It's a 2 tubes in one design, but you can see that there are two together.

Anyway, I just got it today so I haven't used it on a patient. But I heard my dog's heart and lung sounds quite well! Very loud and clear.

I also used it on myself, and I covered myself with 3 layers of clothing and I could still hear fine! I noticed with my Littmann (a master classic) I had to press quite hard...

I bought it on this website: www.egeneralmedical.com for $109 or something.
I'm also glad that I didn't get a Littmann Card. because all the residents have that one and could easily grab mine by accident. I got this stethoscope engraved. I wrote about this on another post too, where I included a review that a paramedic did (he said he could hear more than with this Littmann).

But I suppose either one is fine! I'm not saying that my Master Classic was terrible; it was still very good. I simply desired an adult and pediatric chest piece.

Now I am doubting my DRG purchase, everyone here is so pro-Littmann!

I wouldn't even be thinking this if it wasn't for the fact that I don't like the way the tubing looks on the DRG.

Also when you hang the scope around your neck, the end with the eartips does not sit flush against your shoulder/upper chest.
I think this is because the tubing isn't round.

Maybe I can take a picture to describe what I mean.

But I think I am stuck with it; it is engraved so I can't return it.

    Oh Melissa,
I am thinking that you made a very good purchase....it doesn't matter what everyone else has. I love my Littman....but I have not used a DRG. If you could hear through several layers of clothing, then you must have made a wise choice.

    All My Best,
    ~Angie
