Where do you study?

  1. Hi everyone! Where does everyone do their school work and study? I have been on my bed and I don't think that is working. We have a small house and I am married and have a toddler. The desk and computer are in the kitchen and I can only use them when DH and DS are sleeping so I go in our bedroom and all I want to do is sleep! Where do you find the most productive place to study?

The desk in the living room, but i also live alone, so quiet isn't that much of an issue for me.

I made a rule a long time ago that the bed is for two things 1) sleeping 2) something else that ends in ING, and it's not studying.

I find it much harder to concentrate if i'm studying in bed, and then when i finally WANT to sleep, i can't GET to sleep. So bed and books don't mix for me. If you MUST, make sure you're sitting up straight and that the lights are on bright. Typical night stand lamp bulbs are pretty dim.

Does your bedroom have any extra space where you could put in a small desk? I mean one of those 20 dollar specials, a surface and a chair, nothing fancy.

I found out when I first began school that I couldn't get a thing done in bed. Everytime I would load up with my books and notes, I would end up sleeping on them or they would be on the floor. So I had to change that plan, now I study at my kitchen table or on the couch.

I find that if i do not try to study so hard and just find time here and there i do better on test. I will do the dishes and than grab my books while my daughter is outside playing and sit outside with her. I take my study stuff everywher ewith me. I find that a quick glance at something gives me time to think about it while driving somewhere or what ever it is i have to do. Just a suggestion. I do have my sit down review my crazy study materials and that is in my living room on my couch about 2 hours in the morn before everyone wakes up.

I have a study set up in my home but I always end up studying on my bed. Not sure what the deal is with that. I have a nice desk, book cases etc.. but I never seem to use them. Maybe because it was my dads room, he passed away last December. I guess it just feels weird in there, and I didn't realise it until just now I miss my dad so much. I know he would want me to get my tail in that room and study though. You know how dads are. I guess its time for me to get off the bed and on with things.

I study in my room also. We have a very small home and three young children. I find that if I am anywhere else in the house, mom is fair game. My desk and computer are set up in here so if I get tired of the bed I sit there. I have tried studying other places, but find myself getting side tracked too easily. I only study for 20-30 minutes at a time. Then I will go out and spend time with my family. After a 15-30 minute break I go back at it.

I have to agree with Marie on the bed thing, but at my age sleeping seems to be the biggest past time in there. I am fortunate not to have kids under the age of 27 at home, so I dont have to deal with that. But I do study on the kitchen table as long as DW is not home. I leave the TV off and listen to a great oldies station. But when she come shome, the TV is on and I move to the front room where I have my puter. Not as much room, but I spread out pretty good. One thing I would suggest is that once the toddler is in bed, make sure DH knows you need the kitchen table and some quality study time and to leave u alone LOL.

There is no way I can study when anyone else is around - I get too distracted. When I'm at home, my boyfriend is wanting something to eat, or wants to watch a movie with me, or has something exciting to talk about that just CAN'T wait until later... so I study either after he's gone to bed, or I go to the school library. I have classes every morning, at 8 on Tuesday and Thursday, and 10 on Monday Wednesday and Friday. I work night shift, so when I get off work at 7 am, I go right to school, so three days a week, I have approx. 2 hours to study before I have to go to class. When I don't have to work that night, I will go home after classes and study for an hour or two - the only chance I have to use the desk/computer at home, because my boyfriend is an internet junkie, and by 10 am, he's always in bed (he works night shift too). I cannot study in the bedroom, and barely in front of the TV... and the kitchen table just makes me want to eat... so, it's off to the library I go!!

I study anywhere in my apartment. The problem I have is that my mind needs to be occupied when I study, if it too quiet my mind wanders off all the time. The tv has to be on or something else needs to be going on around me when I study, to occupy the part if my brain that would usually wander. For really hard subjets though I need total silence, but for most stuff I need a distraction.

I used to have to read while an audio book was playing and the tv on all at the same time or else I would never understand anything I read, it would just not absorb. But like I said earlier if what I am studying is stressing me out I will make the distraction dissapear.

I can't study with anyone around. One thing I do is leave the kids at daycare/after care as long as possible. I know this sounds terrible, but if they were home and I was getting frustrated trying to study, that wouldn't exactly be quality time, now would it? I study primarily at the dining room table either when I'm home alone, or when the kids are occupied. I get precious little time at home with my husband, so when he's home I try not to study if I can help it.

I know it's strange, but I prefer to study at the bowling alley.
The noise of crashing pins in the background is so relaxing and helps me study.

I study at Barnes and Nobel (in the starbucks cafe). I get a big ole cup of coffee and put my ipod on and study that way. I have no kids so I can afford to get away with that. I cannot study at home. The bed is so close and I will just tell myself that I am tired. I only study a few hours a week so they don't think I'm a stalker! It is also a great place to meet for study groups.
