When you get your first job

  1. what kind of nursing do you want to do and why. I am trying to keep an open mind, but of course everyone tells you med-surge and I just want to do ER. Anyway just curious

I expect that I'll do at least one year on a med-surg floor to get more adept at skills, then hopefully on to home health. Who knows really what will happen, but right now that is my goal. I have so many different interests, but in deciding what type of job is right for me I have to look at the big picture: can I really see myself doing this for the rest of my career, what type of advancements do I want and will I be really happy doing it. Money is a big issue, but again, to me job satisfaction is more important.

I plan to go directly to L&D/Postpartum. I'm planning on becoming certified as a lactation consultant the summer after I graduate, so I of course want to utilize that certification.

I'm not sure yet. Once I get into rotations and get a better feel of each department I'll have a better idea. I do like Urgent Care/ ER though.

I plan on going straight to L&D/Postpartum just like one of the previous posters. That is my love, and it is the reason I am in nursing school!! After I had my daughter, I KNEW what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The hospital that I will work at (they're paying for my tuition) lets you go work there straight after graduation. I used to volunteer for them, and I can not wait to begin working. I would really love to work with and teach new mothers, so right now I'm leaning towards starting out in Postpartum. Anyway, I have that rotation next year. I'm a junior right now.

For the longest time I really didn't know where I wanted to work, I kept discovering areas of nursing I didn't like. I finally figured out that I don't really like caring for "sick" patients, I really love caring for "broken" patients, so I finally came to the conclusion that Orthopedics was for me. I still get to see a lot, and as a new grad I think it is a wonderful place to start! It is such a team environment. If you know what you want to do that's great, if you don't keep searching. That's the great thing about nursing, you can do so much!

Right now I want to be in ER. However, once I start clinicals, that may change!

I'll be happy to have a job period! lol
    good luck!

Leaning toward oncology... have done clinicals there plus multiple experiences within my family, and it just feels right. Working on setting up a preceptorship right now! Wish me luck please!
