When God opens a door....

  1. It really opens wide! So, I was on my way to a NEW job, that I'm not THAT excited about. Working with Alzheimer's DD adults in a group home setting. They've also jerked me around for 3.5 weeks and had me start on a Friday?? Not the best vibe for employees, I think. Was looking at it mainly to work with school.....However, I've been so busy studying and getting things together for demos/clinicals I didn't stop by my volunteer gig for 2 weeks.
So, I went over there today on my way to orientation for new job.
(BTW, for those that don't know, I worked as an act. director for 2.5 years with MI adults.) My assistant was promoted 8 weeks ago when I left to start school. I left because I felt it wasn't fair to her, and she admitted to me she was not doing it without the position or pay. I don't blame her for that.
She had a past history issue come up this week and was terminated for said issue. In order to keep working, she has to get a waiver, but the process takes too much time. So, I find this all out when I get there today, talking with the act. staff. Half-jokingly, I say, "what would you guys want? Me to come back?" They look at me and say "YES. We enjoy you, we know what you expect, and we don't want someone right off the street."
So, I talked to the boss who is willing to work with me on school, I have no issues in terms of working a weekend day or staying late throughout week to ensure my hours are put in(it's a salaried job, so you have to put in 40 hrs/week). She's talking to the owner Monday, but she's going "I don't see why that'd be a problem, you're already certified, you've been here so long, the residents like you, you're not a problem employee, and I think we can play school by ear."
So, I need some prayers, but I'm hoping that I'll be starting a new/old job Tuesday!! I loved this job and was crying when I had to leave, I woke up everyday excited to get to work and ready to do stuff when I was there. Got along well with all employees and so forth....
It's true, the stuff you wish you never gave up comes back around sometimes. When you have a passion, it comes back to you and if it's meant to be it finds some way to become a major part of your life again.
Say a little wish for me!! I'll let you all know how it goes!

It's great that your company is willing to work with you to keep your Activity Director position while you are in school. If you review the administrative code for the activity program, it doesn't really say that you have to be in the building 40 hours a week, just that you have to be in the building at least four days a week. So you might be able to get away with 2 ten hour days on the weekend and an additional 10-12 hours split over two days on your easy school days. If you go this route, you better be sure that when survey rolls around that your program is in compliance because they may try to nail you on your number of hours.

I am in a similar situation-- I am planning on going back to school full time, but have a salaried position in LTC. I know that there is no way I can work full time at all, maybe 10-12 hours a week, but I am hoping that I might be able to get some kind of part time work at my company.

Yep, am fully aware of this, but at survey times, am telling the staff "Look, just tell them that if you don't know the answer they want, I'll be back at X and will be happy to answer any questions they have about our program here. It's weird to say, but I really want it back!!!

Thanks. Today was my first day, and many of the residents were suprised and happy to see that I was back. It was just like I never left, got right back into the swing of things.
