When did you start clinicals?

I'm just wondering when the majority of you started clinicals.

Please let me know if you are in the ADN or BSN program, and how long did it take before you started your clinicals after you started your "nurse training" courses. Obviously those without any medical training at all need to learn something. :)

For example, those of you getting (or have) an ADN, did you start clinicals the 1st week, 1st month, 6 weeks after, etc. Did you start the first week & just shadow?

BTW, I am going into the ADN program (hopefully start Jan'06).

Thanks! :)

Well, I'm neither ADN or BSN but diploma program and we started clinicals after 6 weeks. We had to learn some of the basics and were checked off in our nursing arts lab.

Sorry, suzy253. I forgot about the diploma program.

Did you have to take 6 weeks, or could one be checked off sooner, ie had previous medical experience, and could do more to begin with.....?

I'm just wondering what to expect.

I start this next week, :yeah:. I am in an accelerated BSN program and we have one semester of theory classes b4 clinicals. Here we go...

We go into clinical On tuesday OR wednesday (depending on the persons day), and our first class is monday. I'm sure we're not doing much that first time though!

I'm in an ADN program. We started clinicals the second week of the first semester.

There is a BSN program at my school also. They had a full year of pre-req's, and then start clinicals when/with the ADN students.

Specializes in ER.

BSN...started clinicals the 5th week into the first semester of nursing casses.

We did not do any shadowing, just jumped right in to all the typical first semester stuff...bed baths, showers, ROM, transferring, etc.

Specializes in NICU.

ADN program, here. We start clinicals 5 weeks into the semester; until then we spend our clinical day working in the lab. Our first semester is all in LTC facilities. Everyone has the same schedule whether they have experience or not. I'm looking forward (I think) to jumping in and getting my feet wet.

Specializes in Urgent Care.

To those starting in 5-6 weeks, was the CNA class a prerequisite?

Specializes in NICU.

We started our Fundamentals class the end of August (last year), then started clinicals mid October. So I guess about 6 weeks into the first semester we started clinicals. And no a CNA class was not a prereq.

Specializes in CCRN.

I am in a 7 quarter ADN program. Clinicals began in week 6 of quarter one. LTC facilities, basic physical assessment and Data bases completed. In Ohio Nurse Aides are titled State Tested Nurse Aides and this certification is a prereq to applying to the nursing program. It covers bed baths, ADL's and such so you are already past this point by the time you begin the nursing program.

Nope. Covered all the basics in lab time during the first five weeks.
