Vent - Uniforms!!

Students General Students

Published

Before I get off on my tangent here, let me say that I know that our uniforms could be worse. I've seen what some other folks have posted on here. Our uniforms consist of navy blue scrub pants with white polo shirts. I don't get the point of having the nursing students wear polo shirts! The "new" incoming students are purchasing scrub tops. They are not giving the students who are already in the program the opportunity to get these, we are being forced to stick with the polo shirts.

Besides being ugly and looking ridiculous, they are uncomfortable. They twist up when you are moving patients around and the collar bunches up. You end up looking very unprofessional and you walk around adjusting your shirt all the time. I just don't understand why they can't let ALL of the students have the option to purchase the new scrub tops.

I'm sorry about the rant. I've been off from classes all summer and haven't been on here much, but just got this news and needed to vent.

Thanks for listening!

I thought it was hilarious when a nurse overheard several of us complaining about always having to hike our pants up (they either come squeezingly tight or balloon like). She commented that when she was done with nursing school she had a uniform burning ceremony in celebration. I thought what a good idea that would be when we are finally done with them!!!!:yeah:

yes, but make it more ceremonial than total.....give them to incoming students to help them save money....

Are you sure your polo shirt is sized properly, and tucked in? I've been wearing polo shirts for years, often in very active environments, and have never encountered any of these problems. Admittedly, they probably look silly with scrub pants, but polo shirts themselves are comfortable and generally rather nice-looking when combined with a decent pair of slacks.

Now, my school has a silly rule that the only thing we can wear under a scrub top is a white polo shirt. I tried to do that at home once and I can assure you that your plain polo has nothing on wearing a polo under a scrub top when it comes to looking ugly and ridiculous.

I have other polo shirts in my wardrobe and they all fit quite well. There was no "good fit" for these shirts. They are just plain awkward. I've tried tucking it in, I've tried pulling it out - NOTHING works except maybe NOT wearing them!! The other issue is that they are pretty thin, so as a woman I feel the need to wear a tank top or something under the shirt so that the patients can't see my bra.

I like the uniform burning idea - we can't pass on our uniforms, they are embroidered with our names. I think I'll plan a party for after graduation!!!:yeah:

I got my uniform last week and it consists of navy blue scrub bottoms *and* a navy blue scrub top. I tried it on and they feel great, plenty of room to move around in. My name isn't on my scrubs, but if the uniforms are still the same in a couple years I'll sell mine.

Ew, I just bought my uniform. That have to be the scratchiest, poorly fitting scrubs I've ever had. I had to get the pants altered because either the crotch would be at my knees or if I pulled them up they'd be highwaters.

There are very few scrub styles that are flattering. But many are comfortable.

I've finally stopped caring what mine look like. As long as they have plenty of pockets for all my stuff, I'm a happy camper.

To answer your question Morte, no, our names are not embroidered on our pants. If my pants have held up well enough after 3 more semesters of clinical, I would consider passing them on...the shirt I will burn with pleasure!

I know that most scrubs are not the most flattering attire in the world, but these polo shirts, well, they are just plain bad!!

ouch that sucks. we just had a succesful campaign to change our scrubs and anyone in the program can choose to go to the new scrubs if we want to.

They didn't change because they wanted everyone to look the same.

They could not make it mandatory because you have to remember....some students are very tight on funds and may not have the money to go out and purchase a new scrub top when they already have the shirts that were originally required.

Think about it...how would most students feel if they were required to purchase new uniforms half-way through the program???
