this may be silly...

Nursing Students General Students

Published

I start school on Monday for my AS at Concorde SD and I was wondering if it would be acceptable to bring a laptop during lectures?

I am noticably the youngest student in my class. (I popped out of HS early, taking an independent learning program, and my laptop has been my best friend since) and I am extensively computer literate. I tried finding one of my teachers after the orientation, but couldn't catch a hold of them, and I am painfully shy...

I have no issues with my laptop being a potential distractions; school is just too pricey to pour money down the sink. Do any teachers ban laptops from the classroom? Any nursing students bring their laptop to class?

Some of my students did, it only bugged me if they were laughing or something which meant what was on their screen was not likely my power points or note taking. I would not appreciate being filmed (such as a webcam however).

Didn't seem to bother students around them, but if you are a noisy typer like me I can see where people nearby might object.

Congratulations on starting school.

You should be fine with your lap top. I had mine out during my first year and used it to take notes in lecture. I also surfed the web when it got too boring. I don't recommend that as some of the instructors got a bit peeved, even though I managed to keep up with the class better than most.

Most lecture halls these days have outlets at the desks so you can plug in a laptop. If your's does, that a good sign that they don't mind you having a computer there. But I'd just go ahead and take it. If anyone says anything, just smile and say you didn't know.

Take care.

Some schools/professors allow it ... some don't. You will have to ask.

If it is distracting to others (clicking keyboard, anything but class material on the screen, etc.), you will probably have to do without it. You'll definitely have to do without it in many clinical situations.

I've never heard of an instructor having a problem with it if you are using it for class and not surfing the internet or on allnurses :). I use it to pull up pictures or additional information when something is hazy for me, it usually helps me pull all of the information together. If I make a note to look it up later I never get around to it.

thank you all for your responses, they're greatly appreciated ^-^

I think I'm just sweating over the small things, to be on the safe side I'll probably pull my teacher aside, or let other students test the waters first

again thank you, thank you :']

I used one for my Psych degree and no teacher ever had a problem with it. There was always several students using one as well.

I'll be honest, I surfed the web more than doing my actual work, which is a don't. If you're not going to use it for work I don't advise bringing it. I know I personally have the attention span of a fly and the computer doesn't help that. :)

But, since you graduated school early you probably pay attention easily.
