That scary student has been reported again...

I know some thought I was wrong in reporting him but I did and my instructor was glad I did. This past weekend he was paired with yet another student and things didn't go well at all.

I don't know all the details but I left at 2:00, the partner left at 2:30 and the scary student left after 3:00. The partner had to stay behind because of the other student even though we all left at 2:00.

Again this guy didn't do any assessments, he had issues with meds, he was forceful with the patient, he didn't know how to document and from what I gather that's just the basics. There's a girl in our group who had to deal with him the previous year and she said nothing has changed. These 2 are new to our class...he apparently failed a nursing class and she screwed up math which from what I gather last year was really rough. So they are with us now.

So yesterday the student who had to deal with the scary one went to speak with the instructor and had a very nice conversation. He said that she clearly wanted to hear what his thoughts were. It sounds like she made a comment a little earlier that was hinting that he should talk to her about any issues. I know she knows there are issues and I think she needs to hear it from us as well so they can do something. Our mid term clinical evals are coming out. I bet he's not getting a satisfactory.

The student who had him first told me she regrets not reporting him and may go have a conversation with the instructor.

It's just a bad situation. I'm sure he's a nice guy but he's a danger on the floor.

Heck she instructor had to spend most of her time with him this past weekend...which honestly is not fair to the other students. She really can't leave him for very long and she certainly can't trust him with meds.

So it continues and it's very clear the instructor wants and expects us to report to her serious issues like this. I wouldn't work with a nurse like him and turn my head so I can't do it as a student. In fact my instructor made a comment that pretty much suggested that she would be annoyed if we ignored these things.

So there's the update on that. For those who thought it was wrong to report...that's your choice, your opinion. I did what I had to do and based on the reaction of the instructor and the report being made by another student...I know I did the right thing. Nursing school isn't just about me...

Hey think what you want but would you want him working on you or a loved one?

I still don't understand how reporting a student who is dangerous is an issue. Quite frankly it concerns me that anyone thinks it's okay to ignore dangerous students or nurses and figure it will eventually catch up with them. I don't want to wait until it catches up because that usually means a patient has been hurt.

So he's been partnered with 3 people thus far and all 3 have been concerned and blown away by how bad it is. And we are supposed to just ignore it? No thank you. My job is partly a patient advocate and that means standing up to ensure safety and proper care.

Please remember that we all make mistakes especially when learning, and even you will make them, both as a student and an RN.

It is not kind to talk about poeple behind their back and it is a habbit that one should refrain from getting into. Before you pick on certain people put yourself in their shoes, and think about how you would feel if you found out others were talking about you in a negative manner especially on a public board, and remember gossip always finds its way back to the person who is being gossiped about!

You are a student, not someone that should be worried or who should be picking on other students, that is not your place!

In my oppinion you are just as bad for continuing to complain about this student, as again it is not your place to worry about how other students are doing, and you will make mistakes and I am sure will not appreciate other people gossiping about you in a negative manner becasue of them.

He sounds dangerous. I hope the instructor does something before he hurts someone.

I have to wonder what it is that you hope to accomplish by repeatedly posting about this student.

Wouldn't your time be better spent building your skills and knowledge base than criticizing a student whose deficiencies you state are well known to the instructor?

It is one thing to address your concerns through the proper channels, which you have already done. It is another for you and your classmates to constantly focus your attentions on this young man.

Be careful, someday it will be you whose practice is called into question.

Hey if he wanted to know the truth I would tell him. I would be brutally honest with him if I thought for 1 second he would understand.

This goes way beyond making mistakes...way beyond it. He has taken this class in the past and failed it. To look at him you would think he's never been on a clinical floor before and that's not true because this isn't the first class with clinical.

This isn't about gossip. So if a nurse is doing a horrible job and just not safe it would be gossip to discuss it with your nurse manager? No it's not. It's not gossip here. It would be gossip if maybe I gave you all his name or where he lived or his age. What I have discussed is a student with major issues.

Yes we all make mistakes...we all do and I do not argue against that. However most of us don't make more mistakes then correct movements throughout the day. It's a ratio and when the # of mistakes is greater then things done right...that's a problem.

As a nursing student I have as much responsibility as anyone else on that floor. I am worried about other students. I worry about those who I know are having a tough time and are wonderful people, I worry about the girl with a problem with her ankle because she's worried, I worry about another girl who had some surgeries and has a lot of make up time to do, I worry about another guy in class because his health could be better...I worry about them because I care. I worry about a student who I feel is a danger because I care.

It seems like many of you have gone to schools where it's very cold and individual. My school is very warm, very friendly, very fun and funny and it's very much about the group and not the individual.

If we don't report things we see and it's found out we didn't I would actually think that instructor would be quite mad at us...in fact I know they would be.

Repeatedly...twice. Oh so much. :uhoh3:

Just updating what happened and the fact that the instructor was looking for reactions and thoughts. This way if somebody else is in a similar situation they realize that maybe they have some responsibility in patient safety not only when they are a nurse but when they are student as well.

So you are suggesting I not post here because I should spend every waking moment working on my skills and knowledge base. Yeah. I don't plan to spend every waking moment on that, I do take breaks.

It shocks me that people find it okay to ignore dangerous people on the floor and feel no responsibility to report. Just amazes me and scares me quite frankly. Protect all but the patient I guess.

No it is not your place to worry about another student!!!!! It is the instructors job to evaluate that student and do wahtever he/she feels is appropriate!!! Gossip is speaking amoung peers and people on a board about someone, I am not talking about speaking with a manager or someone who in athority! My school is fine, I just realize it is not my place to complain to instructors about other students since I know my instructor is already watching us and I am mature enough to know that it is not my responsibility!

There is no need to continue to degrate this student on this board as it serves no purpose!

Well you make sure you point out the gossip EVERY time somebody comes here and even mentions another person since that's how YOU define gossip.

And yes it is my place to worry about other students if that is how I am. I have the right and I believe it makes me a better person. I don't worry about this other student but worry about the harm he can cause others. Yes instructors are supposed to evaluate but they can't see everything and it's possible they only see a small portion of how bad it is. When 3 out of 3 students find it important to report...I'll stick with them.

And I don't see it as complaining. I didn't make it personal about him. I simply stated the facts of what I saw and didn't see. I did not ask for feedback from her. I did not make it about me. I just told her the things she didn't see or hear and left it at that. I can't say the most recent report when the same way because I was not there. I do know the most recent report will also be taken seriously as this student works a rescuer on ski slopes and has some experience.

So I'll take note that you believe that this board is not a place to make mention of anyone at anytime because then it's gossip according to you. Note made.

Gossip: 1 a dialect British : GODPARENT b : COMPANION, CRONY c : a person who habitually reveals personal or sensational facts about others

2 a : rumor or report of an intimate nature b : a chatty talk c : the subject matter of gossip

Just noting that I did not reveal anything personal or sensational, I did not create a rumor or talk of something intimate. Chatty talk would generally mean going off topic and that was not done either. The subject matter doesn't seem very much like gossip when it concerns safety and abilities.

So your definition is very different then the one I know of.

I have no desire to go back and forth with you on this. I feel I was 100% in the right going forward with the report, I thought this was a place to share stress and get advice and to talk about experiences and my instructor wanted the information I gave her. So I sleep well at night...at least while not in a hospital after learning that we are to keep our mouths shut.

It's not your job...plain and simple, it's just not your job to be telling the instructor his every move 'so they can do something'. How do you know he won't be getting a satisfactory--and what does it matter to you???

So it continues and it's very clear the instructor wants and expects us to report to her serious issues like this. I wouldn't work with a nurse like him and turn my head so I can't do it as a student. In fact my instructor made a comment that pretty much suggested that she would be annoyed if we ignored these things.

Are you sure it's very clear the instructor 'wants and expects us....'. Again, it's not your job...it is her job to evaluate her students.

Hey if he wanted to know the truth I would tell him. I would be brutally honest with him if I thought for 1 second he would understand.

I think you are the one who doesn't understand that again...it's not your job. :uhoh3:

You worry too much. As a student, you're there to learn, observe, and practice your skills.

It seems like many of you have gone to schools where it's very cold and individual. My school is very warm, very friendly, very fun and funny and it's very much about the group and not the individual.
