I am starting nursing school in August and will be receiving my required book list soon. Our school book store is so expensive, I was hoping some of you may know of a reliable web site that has better prices.

Also, do most of you just buy what is on the required list, or do you usually purchase the optional books also?

THANKS for any advice,

Penny

I used "bigword.com" and "campusi.com" both are comparsion sites that search for you and tell which place has the best deal. Good luck :)

WHAT!? That's the first I've heard. Why? What is going on? Please share.

Aside from half.com, addall.com finds some really cheap books for you.

half.com was bought by eBay several years ago and it has been eBays plan to combine half.com and eBay. They were going to do it a couple of years ago but half.com sellers made a stink and they held out until now. I've not bought any books on eBay, but from a sellers perspective I prefer half.com over eBay anyday.

allbookstores.com is also a good site that compares several places at once.

walmart.com has textbooks now too, in additon to all the other great resources that were mentioned.

I don't think anyone mentioned www.amazon.com I use Amazon and half.com almost exlusively. I'm angry about the ebay/half merger myself. I don't want to bid and wait a week to see if I won the book, I want to see the price and buy it now. I was wondering about the optional books too. Anyone think it's worth it to buy them? I plan on asking my professor the first day of class.

My school doesn't give you an updated list until the last minute so you have not choice but to use the bookstore!!!!!! I am going to be very careful this next semester because my first semester I bought two books the we used as reference 1 time. Haven't touched them since. This fall the list has 2 books that are not the main text of the class and I am NOT buying them after I get the slyabi if they are refered to often I will try to borrow from Student services. I never sell my nursing books because I figure they are good reference material

I hear you! They do that on purpose:o, and it ends up costing us more.

Except for the required text books, which are many, I think I will just purchase the study guide, I have heard the our instructor takes a few of the test questions from it. I wish I could get my hands on a good test bank for the fundamentals class, do they sell them for students?

Anyway, I am not buying any optional books for reference, isn't that what the internet is for?? It's going to cost me about $500 just for books to get started.

i went to the bookstore today to get the ISBN's of my books, but they had the book section blocked off. I asked the little old woman at the desk if I could get the ISBN's and she got this mean little frown on her face and said "you can not have the ISBN's" I justed looked at her and said "thanks anyway" and left. I'll just look them up on the website and match my books up by title and author and write down those ISBN's and when the book section is opened, I'll check the numbers, but no way am I buying books from there unless I absolutely have to! I have never been at a school where you couldn't check out the books and do some price comparison.

I avoid the mean cashiers by telling them I'm just writing down the prices of each book that I'll be purchasing so that I can save up some money. Meanwhile, I'm writing the ISBN's down. The college bookstore's prices are like highway robbery! I never buy from them either unless I absolutely have no other option. Even if I don't get my book list until the day before class, I'll do without the first week until the ones I order online come in. Teachers are usually really cool about it. They understand.

Most of the teachers I have dealt with agree that the prices are out of control and will give you the ISBN number. I always email my teachers weeks ahead of time to get textbook info..:)

The CC here doesn't want to give the ISBN either. They will sell you a book and then switch it after class begins too. Totally ticks me off. It is so they can make money. They buy the books in mass quantities and then charge full price. Indeed a rip off. I try to go online but the last minute switch really messes all the students up. The nursing program requires you to buy the bundle of books from them and you cannot buy them anywhere else. Also you must buy uniforms from a specific company and they cost a fortune! Even if you are a CNA you must buy uniforms that cost like 100 bucks for a smock and a pair of pants and they are so ugly and fall apart when washed.
