Stethoscopes

  1. Hi!! I'm starting Nursing School this fall and I need to find a stethoscope that has less than 18 inches of double tubing. They told us to look at Littmann's but they are all single tubing. I don't mind buying a single tubing one but she told us that the double tubing is much better for students because its easier to hear with. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can go look for one??

    Thanks!!!

I can honestly say that I have a cheap cheap stethescope that I only paid $12.00 for. This was when I was in MA school 6 years ago and just started to learn. It is single tubing and I had no problems hearing out of it. I have beat it to death in the doctor's offices where I worked after school and I will use it in nursing school this fall.

I will not purchase a Littmann until after I pass my boards as a special gift/treat for myself. I am so tight while I'm in school that I squeak. Also, if my steth. gets stolen I'm only out $12.00.

I also have a regular stethoscope that cost me $17. If I were you, I would just get a cheap one unless required. You'll also get good practice in school on how to take a BP, so I wouldn't worry about getting a more expensive one.

And before you buy one at all make sure that you won't be getting one through the prograsm!

We got a "Nursing Kit" which included stethoscope, BP Cuff (No I am NOT gonna spell it!), and a few other goodies - Of course this was all included in a special "nursing fee" that was somewhere in our tuition and books cost and was not optional

I just got a master classic II from all heart. I figure that you will be using it for a while, you might as well get something you like. I also found a clip that holds you stethoscope. It attaches to your pants. So you can have it with you.... Less likely to get stolen...

If you need double tubing check out sprague. I got my first one with my "nurse kit" (waste of money) and just bought the new cardio scope from sprague and love it! I've tried littman and IMO it's not worth the money and you pay more for the name.

I've had two very expensive Littman's and they are not worth the money. I can hear better w/ my $7. cheapo scope!

For my first semester of nursing school I bought a Littman. One of their lower price models. Could barely hear anything. It was quite embarrasing when I couldn't hear a blood pressure. Recently bought a Phillips electronic stethescope. Very expensive but when I listen it's so good I can practically hear your thoughts. (Just kidding). It's funny - a couple of times in clinicals I used a cheap stethoscope and I had no problem hearing anything. Other times I couldn't hear a thing. The Phillips cost me $160.00 but it's worth it for assessments.

I have a master cardiology Littman and sometimes I can't even hear the heart beat! Sometimes when I tap on it I will only hear out of one ear.

It just wasn't worth the frustration so I got one of those $1.50 disposable stethoscopes. I use it all the time and it is wonderful!
