Basically the one thing that has kept me from persuing a nursing degree is that I am bad in Math. Its just anything higher than basic Algebra,I have a hard time with.

The thing with about Math and me is that if I put my time into studying,I will do good. Not true with Math,it seems that no matter how hard I study I still do poorly.I am going to browse the boards and read the Math related posts.

Has anyone else who has problems with Math overcome them and completed their degree and how did you do it?

Like alot of other posters, math was not my thing. I was so intimidated by it, but when I decided to go back to school, it was do it or don't go to nursing school. I managed to even take statistics and got a B, started the class 3 weeks after a cervical fusion in my neck! I used all available resources the school offered, spent lots of time on my homework. But boy what a great feeling when you finish something you were afraid you could not do! Now you go out there and conquer that math! If I can do, you can do. Good Luck :w00t:

It's my understanding that you don't need anything higher than basic algebra to get into most nursing schools, so you should be fine. I highly doubt we'll be using Convolution or Fourier Transforms in nursing school. ;)

thanks candice. i confess that math comes very easily to me, but honestly have found those who have the concept "i'm no good in math" really become crippled not by the math and their inherent inability to do it but their fear. their fear and anxiety get the most of them, when the concepts of math are something that they can master, but their fears cripple them. they may not like math, and indeed some of us are better than others, and it may be a weakspot academically, but when they put aside their fears and negative self-talk and self-image they can do it.

you can too. good luck.

i so believe what you are saying. i have never been the best at math- or should i say really never picked up on it like others did, but i did manange an a for my math grade for my nursing math class. i just haven't done it in a while and need to review it alot! but just knowing the basics of what nursing needs for it would help, and ease my mind at the same time. can i bugg you when the time comes for my math help????

this has also helped me because i have been afraid to try the entrance exams because I am soooooo bad at Math too. Maybe there's hope. At 45 the brain is getting a little bit slower.

I'm the worse in math. I'm 50++, quit school in the 10th grade ,and have just been accepted into the LPN program based on academic points. I went to my local Joblink/WIA and upgraded my math skills, which are free of charge. I got my GED, entered college and have a GPA of 3.67. Don't let it stop you. If you're determined, you can do it. Just use the resources that are available to you. Before I took my College Algebra, I took English 111 to gain confidence. I thought it would kill me but I came out of my algebra class with a 'B', and was happy to have it. I must admit that I had a wonderful instructor that went out of his way to help me and my study buddy.

There are also many self paced websites that you can access. One of them is www.math.com which is pretty good.

You are not alone. The tutor lab at my school is for all subjects, but everyone in there has come for math help. That (tutoring) was the ticket for me by the way. I couldn't have done without the one-on-one instruction. Good Luck to you.

Thanks Marylynn for you words of encouragement. I have procrastinated long enough. Years. I won't know unless I sit for the test. I heard you can take it up to three times. That's helpful too.

Don't feel bad, Math was holding me back from nursing school also. I am 35yo and just took the ACT for the 1st time. When I took the math part I bottomed out so bad. Well, It has been 18years since I've been out to school. I'm worried I will have to start with basic math, which will delay me on my pre-reqs.

Good Luck to ALL who has trouble with MATH!!!!!!:)

i am really horrible at math, but i am now in my 4th semester of nursing school . i had to study math alot, but i made it, If you really want to be a nurse , you can do it. i don't think that anyone out there could be as bad as me in math,,, so don't let the math scare you out of something you want to do...
