Retake nursing pre-req classes hurt my chances

by KdnRN2B

Hello All,
Well I am starting to feel discourage about me getting into the nursing program. I am a student at Broward Community College. I am very scared that retaking some of my pre-req will hurt my chance of getting into the RN program. I didnt get any Fs just Ds and withdraws. Its not that I cant understand the info taught to me its just that I was going through so issues with my family, my mom was very sick and I had to work 2 jobs to help with bills. Things are looking better for our family, I dont even have to work anymore so school is my top priority. I know I can do this, here is the situation........

Class needed to apply for the program
Chemistry
Anatomy and Physiology 1&2 with lab
English1

These are the grades I recieved
Chemistry 1st Attempt = D
2nd Attempt = A

A&P 1 1st attempt= D
2nd attempt= W
I plan to retake this class this fall august 08

A&P 1 LAB 1st attempt = D
I also plan to take this class again fall 08

English 1 1st attempt= W
2nd attempt=D
3rd attempt = B

If you really want to increase your chances of getting in you can retake all your D classes ..ORRRR Get into a LPN program and do the LPN to RN route

It seems like you have a pretty good feeling of how hard it's going to be for you to be accepted into a program. You have a lot of strikes against you as compared to the performance of my classmates. How did you perform on the ATI TEAS examination?

I don't know about Florida, but entrance into nursing program in California is very competitive at this time. Good luck.

For the RN program there is no entrance test, I was actually looking into the LPN program which starts oct, 2008 and end oct 2009. Everyone is telling me to stick it out for the RN program but I will not be able to start until january 2010 because of the amount of pre-req I need to finish. I took the TEAS for the LPN program and passed only the math, now I have to retake the science, english, language arts. I feel like such a failure Im only 22 going on to 23 and I sometimes feel like by time im done im too old...yes I know im silly.

I performed better at school in my 30's than in my 20's. I think that it was possible for me to get better with age because I better understood my priorities, my commitments, coping skills, and limitations.

You may not be where you need to be academically, but it's not fair to say that you'll never get there or that you'll be too old when you do. Try to learn from your mistakes. You can't implement a good plan if you don't have one. You can't create a good plan if you have a poor diagnosis. You can't base a diagnosis on a poor assessment. The first step is performing a good personal assessment of your strengths, weaknesses, and desires.

Good luck and don't be too hard on yourself. It was harder to think of the long-term when I was younger, but it's necessary. It's what allows some of us to suffer the loneliness of studying when others are out playing. It's what allows us to weigh when to say no when asked favors by friends or family.

retake all your d classes and do the best you can the second time around. i re took anatomy 1. i had a d and then got an a. and i was accepted into the program but i kept my gpa up to a 3.6 after the d. so if you can get them up and keep your gpa high than you should be okay.

I was in the same boat you are and still got in!! yay!! I took classes right out of high school and didn't take college seriously. I came back 6 years later only to find that the classes that I did poorly in counted against me ( Kent uses a points system for acceptance, ex + points for pre-reqs completed, - points for retaking classes, etc) anyway, I didn't get in at first even though I have ALL pre-reqs done and after summer classes ran, I recieved another letter that I was accepted. anyway, don't give up if you don't get accepted. take some really easy classes to bump up your GPA for next admission. i even looked into another school because i was determined to get into somewhere!!
