Relocating and Confused

Hi. I will have completed my prerequisites for nursing at the end of this semester. I applied to my number 1 choice and I was rejected. I was initially sad, but fiance has a job offer in Ithaca and I moving with him. I researched schools nearby and they're all really far. If someone could give me some advice on where to start looking for good schools near Ithaca that would be great.

Also, is Ithaca a good place for nursing? I'm not sure I'll be able to find a job once I complete my degree.

Have you looked at Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3)? It's a half-hour from Ithaca, but maybe less if you're not right in town. It's the closest option. Many people commute between Ithaca and Syracuse or Auburn, but it's a haul. Ithaca College has a nursing program, too, but it's probably a BSN and not cheap.

No idea about job prospects in Ithaca, but over 100 were listed on a job-search website I used to do a quick search in that area.

I probably won't commute to Syracuse. I'm from Georgia and I don't drive in snow lol. I also looked into Ithaca college and when I contacted the admissions office they told me that they don't offer a nursing program. You're the second person to tell me that they offer it. Is there something that I'm missing?

I misread something on their website - duh! :) They don't offer nursing.

TC3 is just in the next town over, but if you're not going to drive in the snow, it may not be an option for you. Driving in snow is very different up here than it is in the South, though. The roads are plowed to bare pavement and salted and sanded, so it's not usually icy. If you don't drive in snow here, you'll never go anywhere. Most school districts rarely close school except for lots of snow, and then it's only for a day. Things don't shut down because of snow here.

The road situation sounds way better than it does here. I'll look into TC3 and prepare myself for driving in the snow! I'd rather my commute be short than commute to the other schools an hour away. Thanks!

I met met a friend in school in NC and she was originally from LA- a born and bred California girl. This was before I did nursing and she got a job up in Wisconsin after we graduated. She was really worried since NC does not handle snow well, but I assured her it is totally different in "the North". I was born and grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, so I know snow. After living there a year she loved it and said I was totally right. If it makes you more comfortable you could also look into taking a defensive driving course. It's really not that bad in the snow- you just need good tires and to not rush. Also, make sure you clear your vehicle entirely of snow- including the roof!! That's a big pet peeve of mine since it comes flying off while driving. Good luck!
