Question about classes & pre-req

Nursing Students General Students

Published

I am a little confussed here. I just got my information packet about what and when things can be taken.

It shows my prerquisites to be four classes. BIOL 1470 or BIOL 2401, ENGL 1301, MATH 1314, and PSYC 2301.

There are also tests you have to take before getting into the nursing program.

Do all of you have these to take first?

Then it says that your support courses are encouraged to take prior to entrance into the nursing program (biology, microbiology, psychology, speech, etc.). Did you all do this? It says that some do it because the nursing program can be very tough.

Also this nursing program is only offered during the day (not at night). I am guessing that this is pretty normal?

That is pretty much the same as with my school. I only have Bio 2401 and Chem 1406 as pre-reqs, but another school in the area requires Bio 2401, Math 1314, Psych 2301 and English 1301. The other support classes in my program are Bio 2402 (A&PII), Bio 2420 (Micro), Psych 2314 (Growth & Dev.), Speech 1311, English 1301 and 1302, Phys. Ed. 1164, and Humanities elective. I will have completed all of these courses by the time I start the nursing program next fall. Not everyone does this, some take the support classes with the nursing classes. I plan on taking some prereqs for my BSN with my nursing classes and in the summer between the 1st and 2nd year.

I have to take an entrance examination. Mine is the HESI, which is pretty common. The NET is also a common entrance exam.

All my nursing classes will be offered in the daytime only. That is usually the case, although there are sometimes night programs, they are few and far between. I quit my 8-5 desk job and went to work as a Unit Tech in a hospital working Friday, Saturday and Sunday only (12 hour shifts).

Hope this helps!

Hi,

I think it's the same for most people. They also give you a good advice about taking the prerequisites before starting the nursing program epecially anatomy & phyiology, and microbiology. I'm not in the nursing program yet. However, I've heard too many bad stories about people who tried to do it all at once. It's better to take longer than failing every semester. Good luck.

I was wondering because I didn't know if I was still considered "nursing student" once I start. I am sure I will learn a lot after the 28th but still wanted to learn before hand. I am so darn impatient.

Each school has a list of pre-reqs ( courses that has to be taken before entering nursing program) and general course ( these may be taken before or along with the nursing courses. It varies with each school.

I have had, Bio I, A&P I, A&P II, Microbiology, ( all with lab), Interm. Math, Eng I, Eng. II, Speech, Psychology, Art Appreciation, Volleyball, Sports Officiating, Foundation of PE and Piano.

This semester I am taking:

Sociology

Abdnormal Psy

Music Appreciation

Tennis

Aroebics

The only course I will be taking with my nursing courses is:

Life Span Developmental Psychology

(by the way, how is this class?)

I am glad I completed all the pre-reqs/general course and only one to do!

Oh wow you go girl. I am happy that you are almost there!

Yes I found out that you can take these other studies before actually starting the nursing school. I will have to do that because I will need the school to be a "little" easier on me since I have the kids as well.

I look so forward to starting even though I will have to take one class at a time. I am very scared and don't know which one to take first!

Hugs,

Nicole

I'm in developmental psych right now. Most of the time I like it. It's a nice break from nursing classes.

I took everything that I had to before I started the nursing program. I have to be full time for my funding to pay so I have picked up easy classes along the way to fufill that requirement. I have taken classes such as a computer course, medical term., and I am taking phelobotomy with my third semester of nursing classes. Thank goodness that my fourth and might I add last semester is full time!!! I also have kids so I needed the easy classes to go with my nursing because I needed to spend all my time studying, and spending time with my family.

Good Luck to ya,

Tina

Hey guys,

I have to do all my prerequisites before entering in the nursing program. I will finish by December 2002.

i have to take at least 60 credit hours before entering. It is not easy but I will survive.

Ann.

After talking it over with DH I am going to take every possible class I can before getting into the nursing program. Then if I need to add extra classes to make it full-time (if we get funding) then I will take things I have wanted to learn or do.

Sounds like all the schools are about the same. I am getting so excited.
