pure water's effect on RBCs

the explanation is that pure water cannot be given intravenously because it will cause hemolysis of the RBCs.

What actually happens to the cells - is it like the hypotonic solutions that result in cell swelling so they burst {only more intense because pure water isn't like hypotonic 0.45% saline]?

Would the pure water cause hemolysis of WBCs or platelets too?

Why only RBCs mentioned?

Pretty much, IIRC. The pure water is very hypotonic compared to the cells, so the water moves into the cells until they burst.

would the pure water (or hypotonic solution) result in the bursting of

WBCs or platelets too?
