Prior CNA Experience Survey - Nurses Needed for Statistics Class Research

Hello!

I am a pre-nursing student, taking prerequisites to get into nursing school. I have a project due in my Statistics class for which I must gather 30 responses or more to a short survey that I create. My instructor suggested researching something of interest and relevance to my field of study, so I decided to research prior CNA experience and how nurses view it.

Thanks so much for taking your valuable time to answer my questions!

1. What is your age?

2. How long have you been a nurse?

3. Did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse?

4. If yes to #3, how long did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse?

5. If no to #3, do you wish that you had?

6. Regardless of whether you worked as a CNA prior to becoming a nurse, do you believe working as a CNA prior to nursing better prepares you to be a nurse? Feel free to elaborate on your response.

3. Did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? yes

4. If yes to #3, how long did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? 3 years

6. Regardless of whether you worked as a CNA prior to becoming a nurse, do you believe working as a CNA prior to nursing better prepares you to be a nurse? Feel free to elaborate on your response. Yes, I do think that working as a CNA prior to being a nurse helps prepare you to be a nurse. Being a CNA helped me to learn time management, how to approach patients, how to physically care for patients (ie. washing up, cleaning up incontinent patients, feeding, helping with ambulating). I also found that working as a CNA helped me to know how to use certain equipment- for example, I'm one of the only nurses on my floor who is confident in using a lift.

I think it does help - if nothing else, you have a grasp of the basics and can concentrate on learning more advanced tasks. One's comfort level with patients who require a lot of care is also increased. Hypothetically, a nurse who must still think about how to give a bed bath may not be able to, say, assess their patient's skin as well because they are distracted.

No, working as a CNA does not better prepare you to be a nurse. I will say that I have trouble making a bed with a patient in it, putting on diapers, and giving bed baths but the only time I have to do it is if for some reason we have no CNAs on the floor, which is rare.

Yes, because I feel that there are many nurses out there that don't appreciate the work that CNAs do everyday for us. Many of us nurses don't have the time to complete basic nursing care for our patients due to the demands of documentation and other responsibilities. I'm proud to have worked my way up from being a CNA and now recently becoming an RN. I feel that I have the skills necessary to do basic nursing care where as I know some of my classmates that were not CNAs do not have those skills.
