Prior CNA Experience Survey - Nurses Needed for Statistics Class Research

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hello!

I am a pre-nursing student, taking prerequisites to get into nursing school. I have a project due in my Statistics class for which I must gather 30 responses or more to a short survey that I create. My instructor suggested researching something of interest and relevance to my field of study, so I decided to research prior CNA experience and how nurses view it.

Thanks so much for taking your valuable time to answer my questions!

1. What is your age?

2. How long have you been a nurse?

3. Did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse?

4. If yes to #3, how long did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse?

5. If no to #3, do you wish that you had?

6. Regardless of whether you worked as a CNA prior to becoming a nurse, do you believe working as a CNA prior to nursing better prepares you to be a nurse? Feel free to elaborate on your response.

1. What is your age? 37

2. How long have you been a nurse? 8 months

3. Did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? No

4. If yes to #3, how long did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? N/A

5. If no to #3, do you wish that you had? Yes, I do wish I had

6. Regardless of whether you worked as a CNA prior to becoming a nurse, do you believe working as a CNA prior to nursing better prepares you to be a nurse? Feel free to elaborate on your response. I do believe that working as a CNA is valuable experience, and that it does prepare you for many (though not all) of the tasks of nursing. I had been a paramedic, which was also valuable, but it didn't help me with things like time managment, learning the "flow" of a med-surg floor, performing morning care and ADLs for patients, etc. CNA experience would have helped in those areas.

i definitely think everyone should work as a cna prior to becoming a nurse. not only does it help you feel more comfortable with general patient care it helps you appreciate your cna's when you do become a nurse. they are your eyes and ears for everything and certainly make your day a lot better. it also may stop certain nurses from thinking they are to high and mighty to clean up patients or fill a water pitcher. i would never ask my cna to do anything i would not do myself.

i believe that any prior health care experience before becoming a nurse is helpful. i don't think said experience would necessarily make someone a better nurse but would give them an appreciation for both sides of the spectrum. i also think that it could help some people to become more acclimated to the types of things we see daily as nurses.

1. What is your age? 30

2. How long have you been a nurse? Still a student. Will graduate in May.

3. Did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? No

4. If yes to #3, how long did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? n/a

5. If no to #3, do you wish that you had? no

6. Regardless of whether you worked as a CNA prior to becoming a nurse, do you believe working as a CNA prior to nursing better prepares you to be a nurse? Feel free to elaborate on your response.

Being a CNA gives you a leg up on your peers when it comes to interacting with patients, basic skills and being comfortable in a hospital/health care environment. However, being a CNA or tech does not provide you will necessary assessment skills. Our program has stressed all along that the majority of nursing is in the planning and cognitive realm. The skills can be taught and comfort will come with practice, but real nursing competence comes from planning and critical thinking about patient needs.

Best of luck in school!

2. How long have you been a nurse? 20 years

3. Did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? no

4. If yes to #3, how long did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse?

5. If no to #3, do you wish that you had? no, but t if I was entering a degree program now I'd want more clinical time, and CNA work would be a great plus.

6. Regardless of whether you worked as a CNA prior to becoming a nurse, do you believe working as a CNA prior to nursing better prepares you to be a nurse? Feel free to elaborate on your response.

I started a diploma program when I was 17, had a taste of healthcare by becoming a lifeguard before nursing school, and it was good for me to dive into the RN program, alternating clinical with classroom. That would be my favored learning experience. I followed up with a degree program while I worked prn, and did not have clinical in ANY of my classes. I noticed BSN grad spend about half the time on the floor as compared to my old RN program. I found it really important to go to work and relate the classwork to what I was doing at work. It generated questions, and helped me remember the material. So CNA work lets you get your feet wet in a clinical setting, allows RNs to be totally comfortable with basic care, and concentrate on harder skills, it's a great source of some extra money during school, and gives you continuous clinical experience throughout your RN program. You may not be doing the RN work, but you can watch how situations are handled, and think through them yourself. (What would I need/do if I found xxx, and I was the RN?)

I think more clinical in the actual program would be ideal, but there is something to be said for being able to stand back and watch/learn, and not have to pay extra for it. The down side is that once in an RN program it's nice to be in a higher acuity facility for work experience, and be able to observe quality care. CNA work should not entrench bad habits- but I'm sure it happens sometimes.

1. What is your age? 51

2. How long have you been a nurse? Almost 5 years

3. Did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? Worked as a Student Nurse Tech (similar to CNA) in school, and years ago before the "C" was required.

4. If yes to #3, how long did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? About 2 years total.

5. If no to #3, do you wish that you had?

6. Regardless of whether you worked as a CNA prior to becoming a nurse, do you believe working as a CNA prior to nursing better prepares you to be a nurse? Feel free to elaborate on your response. Perhaps to get comfortable performing hygiene for strangers, knowing what a CNA does, and most important, not being afraid to get in there and clean someone up by yourself. I ALWAYS appreciate a great CNA on my team.:redbeathe :smokin:

1. What is your age? 30

2. How long have you been a nurse? Just graduated in December, looking for a job

3. Did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse? No

4. If yes to #3, how long did you work as a CNA before becoming a nurse?

5. If no to #3, do you wish that you had? I had two children under the age of 4, so I decided to concentrate on school and family. Now with job hunting and no health care experience, I realize it would be beneficial...but my kids are only little for so long. So my answer is no

6. Regardless of whether you worked as a CNA prior to becoming a nurse, do you believe working as a CNA prior to nursing better prepares you to be a nurse? Feel free to elaborate on your response. I believe that it has benefits, but is not completely necessary. I would have to say that you would have more of an insight on the way things work within the organization and maybe you would pick up more quickly. Although you may learn some things that are not good. I really do not know how to answer this because I don't have experience with any of this. I hope that I was a little helpful for your survey. Have a great day.
