Are Prereqs. Indicative of How You'll Do In Nursing School?

Good morning! I am looking for opinions of those that are current nursing students. I am already accepted into a nurisng program and have to take A&P 1 and 2, plus Microbiology as coreqs., but am taking them before I start the program. Was just wondering is if how you do in these classes indicates how you'll do in nursing school? TIA!

Well if you don't do good in the pre-reqs you won't get into nursing school so it might be a moot point. ;)

I agree with that.

I can also add that I know people who had straight A's in pre-reqs and now they are failing.

I had A's and B's and a C or two, but I was on the Dean's List first semester of nursing school so no it doesn't mean anything.

On hindsight, I'd say that how well you learn your sciences (notice I said how well you LEARN them, not the grade you got in class) makes a big difference. When you hit pathophys, it helps to have a very very solid understanding of A&P and micro and chemistry.

So do the grades make the nursing student? Don't think so, but the knowledge you learned and retain does.

The op has already been accepted. But of course if he/she flunks out it is indeed a moot point. But they are co-reqs, so the option to take them again may be there. :lol2:

To the OP, I don't think it gets any more difficult than A&P, so if you do well in A&P chances are you'll do well in the nursing courses. Nursing school with it's care plans, etc. takes much more time, but isn't any more difficult. Where people trip up is the nursing courses are tested to gear you towards NCLEX and that's a whole new way of thinking and a whole new way of taking tests.

Thanks for your replies! Yes, the prereqs. are actually coreqs. for my program, so all you need is a C. My question anyway was if how well you do in these courses is any indication on how well you will do in nursing school. Tweety thank you, I think you got what I was trying to say, maybe my original post didn't make sense. Thanks again!

I am curious where you were accepted before doing all the usual classes? What school is that?

No, I don't think it's a good indication. One of the problems I'm finding in nursing school is that doing well in the prereqs requires an entirely different skill set from doing well in clinical courses, so many top prereq students get frustrated, and some of them fail.

Of course, if you have good study and time management skills, those will cross over and help you in nursing school.

If, on the other hand, a student does well in prereqs because she's good at memorization and is willing to study for hours if it means she'll know all the answers on the test... she isn't necessarily going to do well in clinical courses, which require critical thinking. A good test in theory courses will have questions with multiple right answers... and one BEST answer. This drives a lot of students crazy.

Yes, after my second Fundamentals test today, I second that!! I went into Nursing School with a 4.0 GPA, never got a B on anything--no test, no paper, no project. This is not to toot my own horn because I now have my first B in a class now. I can go into a test, knowing every line in the book, but when I look at those questions, I feel like I read a different book! It is getting better--the first test I thought I absolutely failed it, but didn't do as badly as I thought. This test, I knew I made a B when I came out. There are just some questions that I feel like taking out a coin and just flipping...So, what all this means is that while we can all be really bright students outside of nursing school, it takes a whole different skill set to do well in Nursing School. And it takes serious perserverance--My hat is off to those who've gone before me and made it through--I have such a great respect for you all...

I'll go beyond that. Nursing School is not indicative of how well a nurse you will be.
