Patient Simulation Labs

I am currently finishing up my prereqs for nursing school and have applied to nursing school.

Do any of you attend schools with patient simulation labs? Do you think they help new students who have never done a number of patient tasks? I am changing careers and was not previously in the medical field.

Well I think we may have what you're talking about...we have Sim Man (http://www.lifesupportservicesinc.com/sim_man_state_of_the_art_trainin.htm) who does like EVERYTHING and also talks in several languages and we have Virtual IV (http://www.laerdal.com/document.asp?subnodeid=6473945) which to me was totally helpful in learning IV's b/c it's a lot harder on the computer than starting one on a real person *personal experience*! We will be using Simmie *as we call him* for check-offs soon. It's soooo cool! :)

Specializes in ICU.

We have a patient simulator and it REALLY helps. I too changed fields and had never worked in the medical field. At our school, an instructor usually goes in another room and acts like the patient. The instructor talks in a microphone that is heard via the simulator. We have to assess the patient and implement treatment plans after we find out what is wrong. At first I was nervous because I was in front of my instructors, but afterwards it gets better.

It definitely does not take the place of a real patient, but it does get you a bit prepared for patient care. Good luck on your career change. If you are anything like me you'll LOVE nursing and be glad you made the change.

Thanks so much for the feedback. The links were very helpful.

I have applied to 2 schools that have patient simulation. I hope to get accepted into one of them.
