WOW!!!

I really can't believe it.

This whole journey has been such a struggle: getting accepted into the program, struggling through 1st semester and almost failing med/surg till I changed my test taking skills at the end. I really only have God to thank. I know second year will be hard but I feel that if I made it this far, I can go the rest of the way and be successful.

aww yea!! i just finished my first year as well!! (i got depressed from studying too much, lol... but when i got through first year, it's like "YEAH!!!")

yea share your new test taking strategies too! im interested in improving my scores!!

Well, my scores in the class went like this (they were all 25pts

Cardio test - 19

Diabetes - 25... I was sooooo psyched!!!!

Respritory - 18... big time bummer

Lower GI - 19

Here is where I started to panic because I really believed I was going to fail med/surg. So I met with my teach and she pulled up all my exams... Heres where I went wrong...

1. I was second guessing myself and changing answers... a lot of the times I initially knew the right answer but I picked the wrong one because the correct answer seemed to be "too easy"... my teach explained that I was actually really well studying in my subject and thats why answers were coming so easy. So I learned to go with what your acedemic gut is telling up and DO NOT change answers unless you are 100% solid on your rationales

2. I wasn't reading the questions completely or the answers... often, i would quickly read the question then glance over the answers and the "right one" would just pop out of the page. Instead, you should cover the answers on your test and really read and understand what it is asking and ponder what you think the answer might be. Then you look at the answers one by one and rationalize them. Remember that most questions will have two right answers but one is more right then the other one.

So those were the basic steps that I started using; don't second guess yourself or overthink the answers (if it's right, it's right) and read the questions and answers completely.

my last two tests....

Upper GI - 23... 92%!!!!... yes, wind in my sails

Final - 64/75... I missed 11 but could have missed 19!!!

And I read what you did to change test-taking skills and I do the same thing- "second-guess" or read the question wrong. On my last test, I got a question wrong, and I was sitting there in co-op reading the question going "DUH- that's the right answer and I put the wrong one down :mad:"

I never thought about covering up the answers. I'm only looking at 1 question at a time, but I'm seeing the answers as well, that's a good idea. Thanks for the advice.

I'm halfway through the first half of medsurge. And also at the halfway point in my program.

Have a good break. I just started mine today and it just feels nice doing NOTHING right now

Double congratulations on revising your test taking strategy! And congratulations on being halfway done! I personally don't believe that 2nd year is harder. It's the same routine, different subjects and you have already proven that you can do it. :)
