A&P II lab and lecture...does this sound screwy???

Took my lab practical on Monday and got a 96....no problem. Now the lecture test was Friday.... Our teacher has developed her own outline to go with the book and she has about 250-300 questions on each unit for us to answer. She puts out a list of the questions that are "MOST" important for us to study for the test. I copied all the questions she said were important....ended up with about 18 pages of stuff(front only and hand written) and studied these....I got a 68(first lecture I got a 56 and 1st lab 86) and I studied! Another girl in my class got a perfect score on the lab and she really studied(she had over 300 notecards) and she only got a 74......does this seem odd?? I was waiting in hall to see how people did and our teacher was complaining because the average score was 56 for the class.....she was saying that there was no reason because she pulled the questions from the testbank and from the basic anatomy book.....one of the girls was like....I want the questions from "MY" book....the one I read and study. I'm frustrated right now over the whole deal. We studied what she said was important for us to study and then she put stuff we weren't told to study all over the test. I have sat in on Basic....it's different from the way we do things.......I don't know....she is going to have a "talk" with the class on Monday and we are all going to have to retake the test on Wed.

Any comments?

Teachers! You never know what they really want do you? I think that if the entire class is doing about the same it is the instructor at fault, not the students.

I was like...68...WOO HOO....2 points from a C!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG.. A&P II is difficult enough without all the confusion of papers and 300 plus questions..wow.

Were any of the questions on the test similar to any questions on the hand outs?

You guys are lucky to get to take the test over.. is it going to be a new test or the same one?

I don't know how it is all going to be as of yet...I am waiting for the butt chewing session on Monday.....you know....the one where we should know all of this stuff? Never mind that we all have OTHER classes......I'm just irritated with the whole issue and need to get all this out before class on Monday so I don't say something really stupid in class....need to make sure I have it all thought through by then......

I don't know if your teacher did like mine does, but all of her test questions are very conceptual. She gives us a printed sheet of objectives too, but if you don't know this stuff like the back of your hand and are prepared to relate it from the microscopic to the macro and back again, it'll look greek. She goes out of her way to make sure that we aren't just regurgitating stuff back at her, and if you just memorize the info, you'll fail for sure.

We take our exams online and are even allowed to use our books and notes -- that's how hard the tests are. If you don't know it, you won't find it in the book b/c it's all concepts. The class average for the 1st 3 tests were 78, 68 and 69.

If, however, she is just pulling out entirely different material than what she told you to study, that's just plain wrong. I'd rather a teacher tell me to study it all to give me a fair shot at doing well, rather than steering me away from some material and then springing it on me at test time.

This sounds like to me that she is pulling test questions from a different textbook than the one you are using.... what's up with that?!?

And if the test is covering different material than what she said it would.... that's like getting tested over the lungs when you were told the test would cover the heart.

Sounds like I'm not the only one having problems in A&P. My next lecture test is Tuesday and I pray I can manage a C out of it. Now I have no problems in lab either.

I hope it all turns out good for you and you get to retake the test. My instructor does not even offer extra credit points.

Good luck.

Wow, that sounds really hard...At my school, this is the first semester that they have combined A&PI and A&PII into one class. Talk about hard! Our teacher types up notes that we have to print out and bring to class, then he adds to them. For example, ONE chapter of the nervous was 18 pages of typed notes, plus he added to them during lecture. Our first lecture exam was over the first TEN chapters of our book!! Ugh...I think I am getting like a 97% in lab and 82% in lecture, so I wish us ALL good luck on future tests!!!

Yikes, that does sound hard !

Specializes in Geriatrics, LTC.

Isn't there a counselor or someone above that instructor that you can go to and discuss your feelings/findings with? If enough people question it, they will check into it.

Specializes in Med Surg, Ortho, Hospice, Home Health.

I went through something similar in A&PI last semester. After the first test, I threw out her "study guide" questions she gave us and studied everything. I found some online quizzes from different textbooks and took them along with studying. I managed an A out of her class- but let me tell you I whined the whole time! It was so hard! She expected us to know it ALL! Her study guide just made it worse for me.

That's great that you are able to do a re-take though! If you want I can e-mail you some links to some of the sites I used.

I have a different instructor for A&PII and he is sooo much easier. He sticks to the basics.

Good luck!!!!

Marci:)
