Okay, Im in shock (not to mention broke)

They warned us in our program what the books would be... we were also told the biggest expense is the first semester, we only need a couple of books next semester and a couple next year.

We were also told some of the books will be used for two years...I am glad, I would hate to think I need to read all 8000 pages in the next 16 weeks!

We use our books all 4 semesters, as does most nursing programs... We bought most of them 1st semester and it was like $700, but for my 2nd semester I am only having to spend $150... So it does get a lil better

Check into students that were in their first year last year & see if they still need their books. Since you have all new editions, they probably couldn't sell their books back. I used old editions last year .... there is almost no difference!!!!! The professors on the first day of classes told us that old editions would be just fine. (This was of course after most people bought the new ones.) Saved me a ton of money ... and I'm glad I did it!

Like some of the other posters, we buy almost all of our books at the start of the program and use the same editions throughout the program.

My books were $950 the first semester. I had to take my friend to the bookstore with me so she could help me carry them all.

Since then I've only had to buy a few more.

Of course, I'm on scholarship so I wouldn't care how much the bloody things cost, but I understand about how expensive school is (I've only been on scholarship for a year... before that I paid for everything myself).

jillian, hello and welcome to the board! i was given two of the books i needed and still have 3 classes that i need books for, but i will not have to purchase from my own pocket. hopefully, the other semesters of books will not cost as much.

like i've said before, i think the mafia is involved with the bookstores, publishers, etc..lol... seriously.. i love books !! but sometimes the prices are unreal !

julielpn, i have to agree "thank god for financial aid"

i've seen many a student in my classes that use very old editions instead of buying new. :confused:

Apparently at my local university, the student ID doubles as a short-term, interest-free, credit card for textbook purchases. I think it's like 30-days to pay or something like that. I thought that was neat.

I just spent 300.00 dollars on books. That is only half of the books that I need. I decided to wait until next payday to get the rest. I still will need to buy more books for next semester. I was planning to buy new living room furniture. I guess I need to scrap those plans.

We bought several books the first semester and since then we've just been adding to our collection.. I've gotten into the habit of buying mine from Barnes and Noble (bn.com). There, if you buy at least 2 books you don't have to pay shipping and depending on which state you're from you may not have to pay taxes. An example of the difference in price would be the psych book I bought yesterday new from BN for $59. At our school bookstore it was $74 new. BIG DIFFERENCE. Hope this helps!
