NY Nursing Externships Summer 2013

Hello All,

I am very new to this website and it really warms my heart to see everyone helping and consoling each other.

I am a junior nursing student and I am interested in doing an externship over the summer. I know there are a few posts about this but a lot of them are from years ago and I wanted some more current advice.

I hate to bother you all with the same things again but could anybody offer up any advice as to how to go about the process of applying, where they applied (I'm from Queens so to hear from people close by would be great but all advice is welcomed! haha), what you got out of the experience, how was your interview, etc. I would really love and appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

Hey. Nice to meet another junior level nursing student!!!! I'm also interested in externships this summer. I'm from Pa though. And I got to a school called Indiana university of Pa. Just wondering what school you go to in NY I'm assuming? And how is your school experience? What classes are you taking this semester?

Hi, nice to meet you as well. I go to CUNY-Hunter College specifically the Hunter-Bellevue Scool of Nursing. So far I couldn't be happier with how everything is going. I was in a nursing program before but I got academically dismissed and luckily for me I was accepted into this program and I'm making sure I take full advantage of it. I just started my pediatric rotation today and after 7weeks (well 6 now) I will be starting med/surg. I am also taking nutrition and nursing research. What about you?

Suggest you move this over to the NY section-- go to the yellow bar at top, click on "US," and look for "NY." You're much more likely to find people there who know what they heck you mean. :)

Nice. I just finished my peds and maternity rotation!!!! Very interesting but I learned that I don't want to be an OB or peds nurse lol. Also took nursing research last semester too. now I'm on my med/ surg part there is an abundance if knowledge. but my clinical prof is really good so praying for good grades. Anyway good to know that ur in a program u enjoy. Nursing programs are very intense but u r blessed when u get into one. I am in the process of applying for a summer externship at the hospital that I did my OB and now med/surg rotation. Hoping I get in. Have u started applying for any in your area yet?

Yes i have started..i feel like all i do is come home and go on the computer to try and email people or find out info about externships. I want one so bad so i've been trying to really stay on top of information and deadlines and just keep my fingers crossed!

you may already know this but Bellevue has a Student Nurse Service Program each summer - it's basically an eight week preceptorship. deadlines are today - I'm headed over there soon actually. you can call Nursing Administration for more info - call the main Bellevue number and ask for the department, it's on the 14th floor.

as for next year, there's a Graduate Nurse Externship Program at Woodhull - but you need to graduate and have not taken the NCLEX yet. I just got into that one through my school (BMCC) - not sure if Hunter offers it. I would ask your nursing department if they can point you in the direction of others... I know Lenox Hill has one, as does Sloan Kettering, but you need to apply to a lot of those by March.

Hi Type1Nurse2b,

The Woodhull externship is it only for the summer or do they do it after each semester? I'm at BMCC too and will be graduating in December, but unfortunately my class (Evening section)doesn't get any info about externships.
