Nursing Love

by j2k2

Today my patient, Tommy had a sudden and massive pulmonary embolism and died in horrid agony, suffocated right in front of me. And what’s hit me hardest is not the fact that he died but how much that I, as a nurse, loved him. I’m wondering why it was that I loved him when he only arrived on the unit last week (I work on a Community Rehabilitation Unit) and apart from the fact that he was recovering from a mild CVA there was nothing out of the ordinary about Tommy or his health. So what caused this powerful emotion to swell within me? The truth is I don’t yet know, I’ll wait until I’ve done my crying then I’ll do a reflection and a Johari Window to get to the bottom of this strange sensation. Is there anyone else who has experienced this? By the way I’m male, near the end of my first year and 38 years of age.
