How many of you thought nursing was going to be easy? Do you still feel this way?

I don't remember the number of books I had to carry but I do remember my back was hurting from carrying all those books.

How many books do you have to read/carry for your nursing classes?

The BSN program was a piece of cake compared to my ADN program. You could make a 70 in the BSN program, but an 83 was an F in my ADN program. I did not find the work to be all that difficult, but I am one of those who test well. I could make an A on a test; it was the "hands on" part I didn't do as well at. I had 2 small children at the time, plus I had to work full-time, which really was the hard part. I couldn't neglect the kids, and my OCD would kick in so my house had to be immaculate. I would begin studying on Sunday night after the kids were in bed, and stay up until 2 or 3, then get to class by 8. This worked out well for me, though, because testing was always every Monday at 8 am, so I would be ready for it. I already had all of the pre-reqs out of the way before I started actual nursing school. 66 started my class (ADN) and 22 of us made it to graduation. Everybody's strengths and weaknesses are different, and everybody's situation is different. I can say nursing school is a total commitment.

I'm one of those that found LPN school easy, and can say the same for my And classes so far.

But I'm blessed with good genetics and grew up in a stable household, so I know that I have advantages others don't.

The hardest thing is the time factor...with my LPN I was working and had two kids under 2 years old; this time I have a full-time job, and four kids at home. I'm lucky enough to have a hubby who is a SAHD, although I do my fair ahre as well.

And so far is easy because I have over ten years acute care experience as well.

It's just like almost everything else, there's a bell curve. Some are going to be at the "easy" end, some are going to be at the "hard" end, and most will be somewhere in between.

I actually find that sad that you said that.

I am currently working on my DNP and that was AFTER deciding against CRNA school (which I was accepted in)... but I wanted to be a nurse not a Dr.

There is a HUGE difference... if you are not a nurse yet... when you get done and are one..you will see......

I graduate in December, I have a 3.5 GPA still and am having to work my little booty off to keep it there! Some classes were easier than others, but by no means was I able to slack off and pull out a passing grade. I feel the content isn't necessarily hard but the application and critical thinking is where people tend have problems, this is what makes nursing school hard. For the person who said A&P was a breeze, I felt the same way, I took it in 8 weeks and was one of the three people in class to get an A, but nursing school is a whole new ballgame! A&P is straight memorization for the most part and the physiology part most people remember until after the test, but you WILL have to know this in order to understand how drugs and disease processes work in the body, glad we had a teacher that did a little A&P refresher for us :)

So, basically yes I thought it would be hard and I still believe it is, but the challenge and reward are well worth it! We started with 63 in our class (ADN program), didn't lose any 1st semester (because we rock!), but we did lose about 10 second semester :( So far 3rd semester, everyone seems to be plugging along just fine!

Good luck to all of you still in school and to those about to begin.

One word of advise: Don't go into nursing school with an arrogant attitude, it will not sit well with teacher, clinical instructors, or peers, and these people are the ones that can make life difficult for you! Just be a sponge and soak it all up, and PLEASE ADMIT WHEN YOU ARE WRONG!!!

Specializes in i hope med/surg.

i am nursing student

still what makes me think nursing is hard is the variety of it

i mean med/surg , community/public health nurse and so other specialities

and for those who compare GPA with medical school

its about passion other wise the medical school will be known as only school for the genius student

well, since i am facing really Circumstances that make me see all my decision to be in nursing school

so after graduating i may enter another college

I think there should be a dislike button as well...

Gingerroot:

You confuse me. Why on earth should people who are really smart and finding nursing school easy become doctors? Are you saying that all the smart people should be doctors and we should leave nursing for those who struggle? WTH? Are you kidding me? I think an attitude like that is what makes people disrespect the nursing field. Sorry, but it's true!

personally i think you can make nursing school as easy or asdifficult as you want it to be. i have people in my study group that stress outto the max every time we have a test and stay up till two in the morning justfor a 25 question test and pull an all nighter the night before a final. i'msurprised that they can function the next day. i can't study like that and makesure i have at least one day off a week to do something for myself and not evenlook at nursing stuff for the day. currently i'm ending my first year as anursing student with a gpa of 3.5ish(finals started today). i worked hard but ididn't kill myself over every exam or assignment. i kept my priorities straightand remembered what the ultimate goal was. like everything in life you have toapproach a challenge realistically before going forward and if you say that you’regoing to "pass" or "fail" then that is the outcome you willreceive.

Some of the content was easy and some of it was a challenge. And quite honestly, if it was all 'easy breezy', I probably would not have finished nursing school--I need to be challenged all the time. The absolute hardest part for me was time management.

GingerRoot I get asked that a lot. I'm about to start nursing school and have a 3.94 GPA, and I never once thought A&P or micro were hard. However I don't want to become a physician because medicine and nursing are 2 totally separate different disciplines. Nursing encompasses caring for the patient as a whole, rather than curing the disease. Personal preference to focus on the patient is why I don't want to be a doctor

I loved my pre-reqs like A and P and micro. But nursing school was difficult for only one reason: the instructors and the mentality to try and trip you up any chance they got. It should be difficult, but a little encouragement would have went along way in making me feel a little bit more confident. I couldn't wait to graduate and get away from some of them. I was a straight A student, too.

Is that what you read?

Did I post that "smart people should become doctors"????

That's not what I said.....and that is not in my original post

Again, my point stemmed from the guy/girl/person...who stated that "nursing school" was NOT hard.

Nursing (in my opinion) is hard, and I frown upon people who take it lightly and conclude that it was "easy" in becoming a nurse.

Peace.

umm.. maybe because they want to be nurses and not doctors, just a thought :)

nursing and medicine are 2 completely different fields...

why should someone go to medical school just because they dont find nursing school to be that hard? doesnt really make sense.
