I posted this in the general discussions forum, but also wanted to see if I could get some feedback here as well.
I've seen many people on this site recommending to shadow a nurse for a day. I'd love to do this, but I'm not sure how to go about doing it. Do I contact the volunteer hotline at the hospitals in my area? Shadowing a nurse isn't exactly volunteer work though is it?
Has anyone here ever shadowed a nurse?
I'd appreciate any information on this that you can give me.

Yes, I've shadowed a nurse before, but it was something set up through my school. I know this doesn't help you. Sorry. I think calling the hospital would be a good idea, or maybe talk to your nursing program about it.
Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely call the school and see if I can get something worked out.

If you're currently in RN school, contact one or more of your instructors. I am a college student who will (hopefully) graduate with a BA in psych in spring 2005 and plan on going ot RN school afterwards. I wanted to see 1st hand what it might be like to be a nurse for 8 hours, so I contacted the Human Resources dept of one of the local hospitals in my area (the Mass. General in Boston MA) and they set me up with nurse to shadow on a medical floor. It was great. I learned a lot and I highly recommend doing something like this to anyone who is considering the field of nursing.

A few classmates of mine shadowed. It was just before we graduated. They contacted the hospital, human resources deptment, in which they wanted to work.
I'm waiting on a call back from a hospital that has a nurse shadowing program. One of the other hospitals doesn't do it at all due to legal reasons, which I can understand I suppose.
