NO Pinning Ceremony for US! VENT!!!

Nursing Students General Students

Published

I just graduated yesterday and am SO glad that it is all finally over!!! But, I have just one gripe... we did not have a pinning ceremony... we didn't get pinned at ALL!!! The student nurse association at our school is supposed to take care of that and they didn't. Intead for those that were part of the student nurse association board that graduated (which was all of them!) had a rope to wear to graduation. All but one of them graduated with a practical nursing technical diploma, the other with thier associates degree. And, none of them were honors graduates. (trivial, I know.) But, it just erks me that those of us that graduated with our associates degree didn't even get pinned! We didn't get any pin at all! But they all got their silly little ropes! At least I can say that most of us that graduated with our associates degree did graduate with honors - so, at least we have our honors medallions to keep as a little rememberance - no pin though!

Sorry for the vent on such a trivial matter. But, I do feel better now!

Thank God I'm done with nursing school... Now it's on the the NCLEX!!! and bigger and better things!!!

:balloons::balloons::balloons:Congradulations to everyone who graduated and everyone that is done with all their finals for the semester!

Me too. It's another example of nursing traditions going by the wayside. i.e. white uniforms, caps....only I think losing the pinning ceremony is a tragedy of sorts.

Congratulations on graduating! I'm sorry you didn't have a pinning ceremony, we plan and pay for our own.

I am sad that you would feel the need to begrudge the LPN students their ceremony. I've done both and can say that my LPN education was excellent and prepared me to be very successful with the 2nd year RN students. Please cut them a break, they will be doing almost the same job as RNs for way less money.

I really didn't understand the LPN/RN graduating at the same time deal. What's the deal with that? Don't the ropes signify something good?

I got capped and pinned at my LPN graduation. I graduated with my associates from Regents and chose not to go to NY for the ceremoney. Wouldn't have gotten a cap or pin anyway.

I wouldn't give anything for my LPN graduation ceremony, perhaps because I was 20 years old. The degree was all that mattered to me when I got my RN.

argh! i am so sorry.

i'm the class president and in charge of fundraising for our pinning ceremony (the fundraising monies purchases the pins). one thing i'm running into is that people don't want to participate in the fundraising. it's so frustrating.

but... we are going to have this. i insist upon it. :)

congratulations on graduating!

I had mine last week - so exciting - I cried.

Maybe you could still have one.

Ours was totally optional - but I think everyone was there. Everyone paid for their own pins. The alumni association paid for the little reception. Maybe you could ask yours for some help.

Also, we go back (optional) in May for the cap and gown convocation with the whole university. Do you do that? If so, maybe you could have a pinning then.

I think that is really crappy! Sorry you didn't get a pin. But like you said, now you will be passing the NCLEX and start your career!

We didnt have any kind of ceremony and that was back in the early 80s. We could (and did) order pins, but no ceremony.

Thank you! But, I guess I should clarify. In NO way was I (or at least did I mean to) begrudging the LPN students. I myself took the route of LPN prior to RN. The student nurse association at our school plans the pinning ceremony and get the pins for the RN grads. The ropes were NOT for the LPN students but rather for the board members of the student nurse association. It just so happens that only one of board members was an RN student. They got themselves ropes because they were members of the board of the student nurse association and didn't even THINK of at least getting pins for the RN graduates. This is the FIRST year that there weren't any pins for the RN graduates and the first year that the board members had any recognition at graduation with ropes. (which is nice, but...not so nice to forget about our pinning) Our school never did pin the LPN students at graduation, so we were really looking forward to that.

Again, I did not in ANY way mean to belittle LPNs. I took that route myself and have worked with several LPNs that were better nurses than some RNs that I've worked with. I would not ever intentionally do that. I am sorry that some have mistaken my words. I was just venting when I wrote this and didn't really think about they way my words could possibly be interpretted.:nono: Looking back I can see how some have thought this. Like I said in my original post - I know that the whole thing seems a bit trivial, but I just needed to get it off my chest. And my husband just doesn't get it, so venting to him doesn't help. I knew everyone here would understand..... And it certainly got it off my chest! Thanks everyone for reading my vent. Again I apologize that my words could be misconstrude. (is that a word?):uhoh21:

Our school actually has a graduation ceremony in December in addition to the one in May. So we were able to walk right away! Some of us were thinking that maybe we would get our pins at graduation, but nope. We asked one of our instructors and she confirmed our 'fears' and was upset herself that we weren't even getting pins.
