Nursing Students General Students

Now that many have gotten their letters for upcoming 2012 I thought I would make a new post for us in the Nursing Student section to make it official! :yeah: Thought it would be nice to come here to keep each other updated on our progress and whats happening in our programs thus far.

I got my nursing student registration date of December 20th to sign up for my classes, meet my classmates and meet my adviser. Then we have a new student orientation on January 9th. Found out the color of our clinical scrubs will be maroon (my favorite color) and we can purchase them from anywhere as long as they are maroon. Been looking at some good books to pick up to help with studying that have been recommended by students and nurses on this site. Heres a small list:

You might want to wait till you see your actual syllabus and book list before you purchase these. I will add more as I come across them, if you guys come up with any recommendations for books, ect, let us know. And make sure to post important dates you have coming up for your programs and how you're doing! I'm very excited and scared at the same time, LOL. :lol2: But I look forward to the challenge.

Congrats to all who were accepted in a program! I will be starting a 2nd degree BSN program Jan 17. We have orientation on Jan 9. I am taking this time to get mentally prepared because next year is going to go by so fast since we will be busy 24/7!! I am truly excited to begin my nursing school journey. This time next year I pray I will be graduating. Again congrats to all of the future nurses on this board!

Questions for those who have already attended their orientation, and those who will be:

What did you wear? How did you dress? Did you dress professionally (Dress pants, shoes, ect) or casually (Jeans, nice shirt/sweater/ sneakers)? Not sure what to wear since no dress code was given, want to make a good impression with my peers. Thanks!

I think you are always safe with business casual... Everyone at our orientation was pretty casual, but presentable... no need to dress up fancy... you are already in!

Business casual is fine. We had a number of on campus things to complete such as fingerprint/background screen, meeting with our nursing faculty advisor in the days after orientation. They basically warned us not to dress like a hoochie momma but otherwise until classes start we can wear what we would wear any other time we'd be on campus if not too revealing/low cut or thong exposing. We have a campus uniform and a clinicals uniform. We were warned always wear our campus uniform when going to clinical sites for prepping for next days clinicals. Our director was at the hospital at 11 PM and saw a student come in wearing pajamas. That student was placed on first level warning. Too many can lead to being dismissed.

Pajamas? Wow. LOL! :lol2: Thanks for the info.

I want to say, congrats everyone!! I got accepted into the ADN program for Spring 2012 and I've been attempting to finish my check off list before orientation on December 9th and before school starts (Jan 14th).

Already done: all immunizations, background checked, drug tested, ordered the Dove uniform vest (that thing is expensive, super ugly and even though I ordered an XXS, I'm like swimming in it), ordered nursing kit, and just got CPR certified yesterday (was it just me or were others thinking about the song, "Stayin' Alive" when they were doing the chest compression?)

Still need to do: take passport style photos for badges (I hate taking pics...), buy white polo shirts, physical exam (will do that this coming week), order books, and buy misc. school/nursing supplies

So super super excited. I wish everyone the best of luck in your programs! :yeah:

You're going to have an interesting time... your first 5 weeks will be all classroom, and then you'll start doing your clinicals. Do your care plans on the computer, ensure that there aren't any personally ID info on there though. That way you'll be building a small library to copy/paste some of your info as the semester rolls along. When you spin-out to OR, keep an open mind, ask questions, and don't get in the way. Keep a few extras of the prep sheets that you'll get. Most of the lectures will have powerpoint slides. Print the handout with 3 slides/page so you get space to write notes on. Do your reading and go through the SLO's. All your instructors are very supportive and want all their students to succeed. They really want you to do well!

That Dove vest: Those things are TANKS!! They've held up well so far.

CPR? That "stayin' alive" rhythm is just exactly the timing for doing it.

Have a great time in class!
