I just graduated from a BSN program, but I am an older student (50) with three children. I am starting to worry about working in a hospital because I don't want to work on holidays or nights, mainly because my parents are older and I just don't want to miss special time with them. I don't know how much longer I have with them. I worry that I won't get enough experience if I don't work in a hospital, which makes sense, but i'm trying to weigh that against time left with my parents. I have always wanted to be a nurse and everyone keeps telling me I really need to start in a hospital, but i'm wondering if there are other nurses who haven't worked in a hospital setting and how it has worked out for them.

If you don't want to work night shift or holidays, you should consider alternatives to the hospital environment. You should look into fields such as public health, school nurse, independent surgery center, or a doctors office, etc.
