Hi All,

I recently graduated last week and I have a bit of a dilemma, I have been working in a hospital as a UC/CNA in MedSurg and in respite care of children for the past couple of years. I love caring for people and providing information that can help them make the best choices about their health.

My problem is that I know I will be offered an RN position in my unit and I was already offered a New Grad position at my other job working with kids. BUT I did my preceptorship in women's health and I LOVED it. I think I may be able to get a job on that unit because I have networked my butt off and I know a lot of people on that unit at my hospital.

So, should I start in Med Surg immediately or do I follow my heart and dreams and try my best to start off my career in Women's health?

It is good to know that my hospital hires new grads and that I have letters of recommendation from my professors in addition to being told by the Director of the New Grad program for Women's health that she fully supports New Grads going into specialty.

Talk to the nursing manager in women's health asap, if at all possible. If you can get up there now, wonderful. If you can't, then go with med/surg for now.

So you have three solid job opportunities while still in school? Awesome!

I'm not sure what your dilemma is, it's like complaining it is difficult to fold your wallet because of all the 50's in it.

I would probably pursue the job you said you "LOVED" early. If that falls through, accept the offers you know are coming.

Thank you! I am not complaining by any means BUT I do not want to burn bridges with my med surg DON. When she hired me last year, she told me she wanted me to transition into the RN role when I graduated. And although I know how valuable that year of acute care experience is, I know that I would be itching to do what I love instead.

You give good advice, I will do my best to officially be hired in women's health and since I'm staying within my facility I should be able to go back to med surg if I need to.
