Hi everyone,

I normally only browse this board but I thought you all could hopefully offer me some advice on something. I have already posted this on the pre-nursing board but am hoping you guys could offer some insight as you have all been through the prereqs stage already.

You see, I have a bit of a dilemma in my mind right now. I am currently in my 2nd semester of prereqs required to apply for the ADN program, a little background first...I am 32 years old, was a very young Mom (16 yo) and married young and raised 4 kids. My oldest is graduating high school next year and my other 3 are right behind. I have wanted to become an RN since I was 17, due to life circumstance i only achieved my CNA back in 1998, my life took a turn and to make a long story short, here i am now able to go back to school.I graduated high school early though, I challenged the equivalency test. but I never formally took chemistry, algebra ,etc so i am now playing catchup on my math classes. Before I can apply to the RN program I have to complete college math (math 1010), as well as a statistics class. well to get to that point I have had to take 2 "remedial" math classes as i never learned algebra. I am in my 2nd remedial math class this coming semester which leaves me to take the math 1010 in summer., at my school you cannot take chemistry until completing math 1010 which will be completed the end of this summer leaving me to be able to take chem in the Fall. My plan was to apply to the program this fall, which I can do as the chem and stats classes will be in progress, which they will accept. but my concern is the TEAS test. Mainly taking the TEAS test when I have not yet had chemistry. Do you think that is a bad idea?? I could really use some feedback!! I don't know how much chem is on the test, I have had some very basic chem in my biology class, etc. What would you all do???? Please help

Thanks in advance,

Karla

Hope to be future :nurse:

You really, REALLY shouldn't take the TEAS test until you study chemistry. I had several very specific questions I remember and if you've never taken chemistry will probably not know them.

That being said, you might learn chemistry elsewhere, such as a private tutor, online lessons etc. Also, you might be able to sit in a chem class if there is a really cool professor. If you plan on taking the test in the fall before you take the class I would suggest buying a study guide and study the area of chemistry they are asking about (i.e. The periodic table, molarity and concentrations etc.)

Best of luck!

Personally, i don't think its a bad idea. The science portion of the teas test only consists of 30-35 questions? It's not a lot and remember the questions range from anatomy, biology, plants, chemistry, geology, etc etc. Chemistry is only a small part of the science portion. If i were in your shoes, i'd take the test. Also don't spend too much time studying for the science portion. I did and it was a mistake. Make sure you study just as hard for math, english, and reading comprehension since these three will make up most of your grade.

good luck

I don't remember having a substantial amount of chem on my TEAS exam. I would suggest getting the study guide and review everything in it well. My only trouble with the exam was the English portion with all the grammatical 'rules' ugghhh it was so tricky (besides I haven't seen that stuff since the fourth grade). I warned a fellow friend of mine about the same thing and she said i was right, after she didn't pass, because she didn't listen to me. At my school you have to pass with a 75%. But be very careful because even if you do very well with the science portion don't expect for it to make up for another portion of the test if you "bombed" it; doing well on one section won't "make up" for another section

There is chemistry on the TEAS test. My suggestion is that you go find a library that has a TEAS study guide and check it out. Get a good look at the types of questions and judge for yourself.

What freaked me out on the TEAS test were the weird questions about cloud formation and tectonic plates.
