Most boring clinical site?

I promise I'm stuck in the middle of it. I'm so disappointed by the clinical sites I've had the past few terms. I try to make the best out of the situation but honestly they just aren't good places to learn a whole lot. Other than bathing and vitals. Not all "med/surg" floors were created equal.

I know I'm not the only one. It's just disappointing is all.

wow do i ever have you beat. i had one clinical in my geri class in which we did nothing, and i mean nothing for the 10 hour day. we literally sat in the conference room and stared at each other until lunch. came back and stared some more. it was an excruciation experience, which made me write a letter to the college campus chair.

bathing and vitals would have been a blessing at this facility. i hope it gets better for you.

wow, and i complained about my crappy peds clinical where i had to do (almost) nothing while a bunch of mas calling themselves "nurses" did all the cares.

i don't think winning is the correct term. thank god i'm almost done with this school.

p.s. i don't think any future clinicals will be held at that location. i had a long conversation with the campus chair about that site.

yeah, that sucks. i would have been insane by the end of that day. i try to stay busy. but you can only clean so much, organize and restock so much...etc. after the 5th time the techs get sick of us asking what we can do when there's just nothing to do.

but to op..im sorry=(, i dont understand why schools even have clinicals that we arent "doing" or actively participating in nursing care, and i dont mean wiping a##. we are they for experience... sitting around isnt the way to get it

OP, I know there are definately clinical sites where it is so difficult to find things to do and you can get very bored. I'd encourage you to advocate for yourself and try to make the most of it.

Is your site part of a hospital? If so, ask your instructor if you can visit the ICU, or the OR, or accompany a patient off the unit for a procedure. Ask the charge nurse if there is something interesting going on with another patient that you can do/observe. Hang out in the nurse's station and listen to the nurses in case something interesting is going on. Answer call lights, help the CNA, shadow your nurse, or read charts and look up the diagnoses on line.

If you are LTC, ask to follow the treatment nurse. Ask the charge nurse if there are any dressing changes or other procedures you can help with. Read through the charts. Find a lonely resident and just sit and talk with them. You can make a big difference in their day.

I hope your future clinical sites give you more opportunity to practice skills.

Wow, is all I can say. I start clinicals in January and hope that I don't have an experience like that. I want to (and hope to) do everything I can so that when I starting nursing I have a little experiene. Good luck to you.
