Hi, everyone I started school last week and I have 18 credit hours, Human nutrition, Western Civilzation 2, American history 2, Human lifespan development and Microbiolgy. I also am almost 21 years old, 4 months away and a single mom of a little girl who is almost 3 and I work 18 hours a week Mon, wed,and fri and I am off 2 days a week not including saturday and sunday, but I live at home with my mom and dad and they are exteremely supportive and help me out with my daughter so I can study at times when I am not at school and have free time The only class I am worried about is Mircobiology, I forgot some of the chemistry and I am worried that my chemistry skills will affect my microbiology class, I received a C in chemistry. Not only am I worried about the chemistry needed for micro but I am worried about those big words, how can I get a better vocabulary for Micro, anyone that has had microbiology study tips that you had and how you manage to do well or even simply past will greatly be appreciated, has anyone used the Microbiology Coloring book, I heard is great but I want input from nursing students who has used the book ANY helpful information will be more than appreciated and you can e-mail me at [email protected]

Thank you,

I took Microbiology earlier this year and don't remember that we had chemisty in this course, thankfully. I had to have basic biology and A&P as pre-requisites so that really helped with the vocabulary. If you have not had these classes, I would recommend purchasing a medical terminology book, that will help to break down big words so that they are easier to understand. A medical dictionary will also help. I am enrolled in a BSN program now and I still study with my medical dictionary to look up any word that I don't understand or don't know the meaning of. When I took micro, I rewrote my notes when I got home so that they were easier to follow and it helped me to remember things by actually writing them for a second time instead of just reading the first draft. I have 4 kids so I know time is limited for you but you really have to put in the effort to not only get a good grade but also to comprehend the material. You will see material from your science courses throughout nursing school so the initial time invested in well worth the effort. It will save you a lot of time by not having to reread material you completed in your pre-requisite courses. I don't know if I have helped you any, but I wish you the best of luck. Hang in there, it will all come together for you later.

When I was in school, I used to record the lecture. When I got home that evening or the following day,I would listen to the tapes, review and compare notes. Then whenever I would have time or while I was driving I would listen to the tape. I would even listen to the tapes while I went grocery shopping, Doctor's appt. or where ever I went that it was impossible to carry along my books and read. I had a small tape recorder with a tiny ear phone. There were time that I even fell asleep listening to these tapes. (lol) You wouldn't believe how much you retain from just listening to the tapes over and over again. I graduated with a 93.86 GPA. I did this for all my classes. I hope this is of some help. Good luck. And by the way, this also came in handy with the boards. I recorded myself reading out loud the NCLEX and everything we reviewed in class in reference to the boards. It helped me tremendously.
