Looks like I am not attending school

  1. Well I spent 1600 for an online course for nothing! I won't be able to attend school this year for nursing because I bombed the TEAS test. I was in the 51 percentile. I did well with my math and reading and english but not so well with the science. Because the information I studied more on was the A&P and there was none of that on there! Therefor if I would choose to go to school I have to wait another year and try again, which I know I am only going to fail again. I feel like a complete failure and am terribley misserable now. My dream has come to an end before it even began, and now I am going to hear it from everyone how much of a loser I am. Well take care everyone

I think right now you are probably in shock (sort of). Why are you saying that if you try again, you'll fail again? Untrue. Retake the TEAS, but focus on the sciences that were on there. Yes, it really sucks to wait another year, but if that's truly your dream, then you have no choice.

My biggest thing is if I wait another year to go to school, I am making everyone around me wait on everything they want to do. Only to feel I will fail it again. Because even though I got almost a B (78.4) I placed in the 49th percentile for national and my school wants a 60th percentile for national. I just feel it is a sign for me not to attempt to go to school.

Ditto! Retake the test. You are only a failure if you let yourself give up; please don't do that. Study the sciences, take other courses, keep busy and focus. But retake that test.

    Please.

Amy, I am so sorry to hear about your TEAS troubles and I completely understand your frustration with the science section. I have taken college NUMEROUS science courses at the college level (Physics 1+2, Chem 1+2, Bio, Micro, A&P 1+2) and I did not do as well on the science portion as I would have liked. Furthermore, I even purchased the study guide for the TEAS and found the science portion of the actual exam to be very different than the SG.
My advice to you is DON"T GIVE UP! Go to the library and check out a few high school chemistry, physics and general science textbooks. Work through some of the basics and re-take your exam. Don't let this one small set-back ruin your dream!

Are there other classes you can take in the meantime? Maybe audit/redo the science courses where you feel the material might help next time around? Or perhaps you can take classes that you might need while you're actually in a nursing program or after, such as BSN classes or something else you can use or will need later on? I truly do believe there is such a thing as 'fate' and there must be some reason this has happened like it has...do not let the time go by with nothing to show for it....move along toward your goal even though you didn't get in this time around....

My dream has come to an end before it even began, and now I am going to hear it from everyone how much of a loser I am.
And seriously, this kind of talk does nothing good for you....you're not a "loser"....read around on these boards about all the struggles many have gone through in this quest to become an RN....there's nothing that says it will be simple for any of us...if you really, really want to pursue this profession, it looks like you're going to have to prove it....to yourself -- not others...they've got their own problems and anyone who looks at you as a "loser" is someone I would not consider a friend or loved one....people who care about others understand that life has its challenges and doesn't always come easy....if they're not being supportive and understanding, I'd be looking for other "everyones" in my life...

You don't say how old you are, but I am 51 and only in my second semester...unless you've got one foot in the grave, I got news for you -- you've got many opportunities ahead of you to make this work for you....

I hate to put it this way, but your failure will help put the whole thing into perspective. Next time around you'll probably take it a lot more seriously and be better prepared.

I feel your pain. I didn't get in either, but your score is a bit different than mine. Science wasn't my problem, in fact, I did well. But the math and reading what were caught me off guard, not that I was a complete moron. The time limit was too fast and I couldn't help myself stay focus. Shame on me though but now, in now in my spare time, i review the study guide, espcially focusing on my weaknesses: math and reading. Therefore I'm hoping that the next test will less pain. Don't give up your hope just yet.

The dream only ends if you stop pursuing it. I went back to school when my oldest boy was five, youngest was 3. I went part time the first year, full time (15-16 credit semesters) the second (worked 24 hrs a week as a CNA). Had a Bipolar husband, who was having major mental problems at the time, who resisted my going to school. I got into a PA program, my husband didn't want to move to where the program was, decided to divorce me instead. Had to quit school for a year to go through a Divorce and custody battle (I won), he didn't pay support for almost that whole year, oh and I hurt my back when I was a CNA, 8 months of PT. Got into two PA schools near where my mother lived, we planned that I would live with her and go to school. Then she got transferred out of the state the schools were in. Last year, moved back in with my mom in the new state, went back to finishing prerequisites three weeks after my divorce/custody was finalized. Got into University of Maryland School of Nursing this year and almost done with my junior year. The boys are 7 1/2 and 10, now.Sooo if I can do it with every obstacle I have thrown at me, I think you can go back next year and retake the TEAS test. You will make it ,if you really want it. Might take a couple of times to pick yourself up and dust yourself off, but you can do it. I have never regretted any of the obstacles, they have been worth finally getting here.

Hey, don't give up. My daughter got a borderline score on the NET, a similar type of test. They were going to have her retake it, but the school decided to go ahead and let her in anyway. She made the dean's list for the 1st semester and looks like she will second semester. She was never a stellar student in high school, but she loves what she is doing and works really hard. YOU CAN DO THIS! Don't give up! Maybe even look at another school if there are others in the area. Maybe the online format wasn't for you. Best of luck.

Thank you to everyone for your words of encouragement! I am going to do it, I am going to take the test again when they allow me to. I won't be able to start school this year but next year if I pass the TEAS.

    Amy,
You only see the obstacles when you have stopped focusing on your goal. With that being said, pick yourself up and brush yourself off. I'm sure you will make a great nurse someday, now you just need to get your determination back. Why not look into other programs while awaiting to take the TEAS again? Many of us on these boards had to apply to more than 1 program. Nursing programs are so competitive that you really can't put all of your eggs in one basket.
I'm not sure where you are located, but go to discovernursing.com and do a program search for other programs near you. You might be suprised to find another program that might fit you better.
Good luck and keep us posted.
