Just had my first hospital clinical day

I just had my first hospital clinical day. This is my first clinical day for med/surge, in my 2 previous nursing classes my clinicals were at LTCs.

It was so awesome and amazing. I have learned so much today. The RNs at the hospital were so kind and helpful. I was able to follow my pt to different units and the RNs in each unit took the time to teach me about the unit and how to care a pt who is in that unit. They taught me things that I won't be covering for a few classes, but that is awesome.

So thanks to those RNs who take the time to help a student. And thanks to all the healthcare staff that take the time to help a student too.

:)

that was a good experience, cause they are not always like that....enjoy:nurse:

Glad you had a great experience. I hope I have the same experience as you.

Hope my first official clinical day in Med/Surg turns out as good as yours did! I am so nervous it isn't even funny. Last semester I did LTC clinical rotations, now this just feels so nerve-racking. I couldn't tell you how I am feeling right now, all I can say is that I have been pretty snappy to everyone around me all day, due to what is to come this week. I am in an 8-week semester for Med/Surg I and II, along with their clinical as well, and I am going insane. Tomorrow and Tuesday are full hospital days, we have to do a database on our patient and Tuesday we have to do care plans... and Wednesday we have an exam over 5 chapters. Anyone wanna dig my grave for me?

My med/surg was ok. I just finished my second day of clinicals in OB and wow! I got to watch a c/s, some procedures and got to coach a mom. My nurse said "You stand here and do this....." and she stood back and let me assist. Of course, the doc does all of the work, but my experience in L&D has been giving birth, not helping a mom give birth! Our mother baby rotation wasn't too exciting as the nurses there didn't know we were coming, but I did help a new mom breastfeed! Mine told me "I am so sorry, I didn't know you were coming otherwise we would have saved something for you to do!" She said the most favorite part of her job is teaching, whether it be students or new moms. We go back this week to finish out that rotation. I will get a day in the NICU and then hopefully my last day I can go back to L&D. Hopefully my peds rotation will be just as fun! That's next! I have exactly less than a year and will graduate with a BSN.

this makes me look forward to clincials also....i start the LPN program at eastern shore community college this fall, and one of the places for clinicals is PRMC, our local hospital where i had my c-section and spent a lot of time during my last pregnancy (tubes were tied). i hope my experience goes as well as some of yours do!

They say you get out of it what you put into it. Most of the nurses I have encountered are willing to teach you what you want to learn. Being an LPN for awhile now, I am willing to teach if someone is willing to learn. You may have a bad experience now and again because the nurse is grumpy and doesn't want a student, but for the most part they all are willing to go the extra mile. If it's a teaching hospital that's even better. Good luck to you!
