Inappropriate Patient Behavior

by Marnaby

I just experienced inappropriate behavior from one of my patient's last night and I wonder if I dealt with it in the right way.

I was taking a pt's BP and when I was taking the cuff off he tried to grab my thigh! I was kind of taken aback and I pushed his hand away, told him no, and that it was completely inappropriate. He was somewhat confused at the time and didn't know where he was. It was also one o'clock in the morning so I assume that the time didn't help his orientation either.

I'm a new RN and that is the first time that I have had to deal with that type of behavior. I was just curious as to how others out there have dealt with patients that act inappropriately or say inappropriate things. Thanks!

I probably would have handled it like you...especially because he was confused. If it happened with a non-confused patient, I would have told him no and reported it to my supervisor.

I work in a home for the mentally retarded. One little guy is always wanting me to hug him. And, I have no problem with that. He doesn't do anything to suggest it's other than innocent. The problem is this one other man that is 6'3" and 240 pounds. He has sexual problems and looks me up and down every time he sees me. After he saw me hug the little guy last night, he came up and thought I was going to hug him. I politely said "No, you know I cannot do that." He's made inappropriate remarks to me before as well. I simply report him when he does that. He didn't get upset that I wouldn't hug him because he does understand to some extent.
