I got to see my first real birth yesterday!! It was so incredible to see and of course, I was in tears after the beautiful 9lb baby boy popped out of mom. I was told by the RN's that it was NOT a normal delivery in that it was really easy and quick. She was only in labor for about 6 hours and only pushed for about 5-10 minutes before the birth. It was a really interesting thing to see, especially since I don't have children of my own yet. Now I REALLY want to have a baby. Working around all the newborns is great, even though I would never want to work as a nurse in L & D. I have also seen some circumcisions and I'm looking forward to the first Foley I get to put in.

So far, this semester is starting out great!

How is everyone else enjoying their clinicals so far?

I'm glad you're enjoying clinicals! We won't get to do OB until this summer...I cannot wait! It's one of the things I have never seen that I absolutely cannot wait to see! I'd be so nervous about putting a foley in a new born! Hell, I'm nervous about one period (wasthisclose to doing one last semester, and my pt was discharged!) Anyways, congrats on your first birthing experience! :D -Andrea

Oh, I guess I wasn't clear...teehee.....a Foley in the mother! I don't think I would want to attempt one in a newborn either!!! The only reason I couldn't do the one yesterday was because the baby's head was too low and the nurse said it would be pressing on the urethra, making it too hard to insert my first one. Of course, I was thinking it would be easier to do it on a woman who had an epidural since she wouldn't be able to feel it! :)

Melanie. Wow...good for you! Sounds very exciting and that's one thing I look forward to seeing is a birth. The hospital we're associated with tends more towards the elderly population and they don't have L&D anymore but in my senior year (presently a freshman!) we have clinicals at larger hospitals and then I'll get the OB rotation. I'll have to wait patiently and learn from your experiences!

I'm on MedSurg now...last semester I was on Orthopaedics dealing with a lot of hip fractures/replacements, etc. and any overflow from the med/surg units.

Have clinical tomorrow and just got home from picking up my patient info...COPD.

I'm very excited for you and look forward to reading more of your posts. Cheers!

I just finished my pediatric rotation yesterday. I got to insert a straight cath into a female infant. I got it in on my first attempt!

I start acute med/surg next week, but I'm excited for OB next month.

The first time I saw a lady partsl birth the baby was born premature. He just slid out of his obese mother (who I couldn't tell was pregnant). I fell in love with the baby and that is how I decided I want to work in the NICU. The NICU team was there for the delivery and they let me hold the oxygen near his face while the mother held him for a few minutes.

I'm in my OB/Peds rotation now too...except I don't like it. I now know what kind of nursing I don't want to do. I love babies don't get me wrong, but sick kids and miserable moms is not my thing. I have two kids so I've seen two births and cut two cords...I'm good to go. Seeing those damn cute tiny little babies does make me almost want another kid though...almost. I'm s/p vasectomy so it would cost me about 8k just to be able to try for another one though and OUCH I've heard your scrotum swells up to the size of a grapefruit...yikes. Anyway I'm glad ya'll are enjoying it...I just can't wait for psych, now that's fun!

My OB/Peds rotations were my absolute favorites. I just felt "right." It's not so much the L&D, I loved the nursery, the teaching in postpartum, and taking care of the kids when they were a wee bit older (even the obnoxious teens can be rewarding:rolleyes: )...I had a few crummy days to be sure, but I think I found my niche in nursing. :)

I'm in the peds rotation right now & the only thing I dislike are the nurses on the floor. They are so unfriendly, I don't understand why. It's tough seeing injured children--especially those that are abused. I am looking forward to OB starting in March.

I can't wait to get to OB :)

Specializes in L&D.

I loved OB also. I plan on being a L&D nurse when I graduate, but that may change once I go into other areas of my clinicals.

OB was the second clinical I ever did as a student and it just felt right. I graduated in December and just accepted my first GN job in guess what....L&D. I loved it so much that it became my whole driving force to finish school. I can't wait to start - Feb 16th!

Good luck to everyone!

I am a second semester ADN student and am about to start an OB rotation in a couple of weeks. Anyone got any advice? I am scared to death!!
