I'm bummed out

Nursing Students General Students

My little sister, well she just turned 22 this month, is a dedicted student. She's got a 3.78 GPA. She finished all her pre-req's and her support courses and she turned in her nursing application in September. She got "the letter" last week and she didn't get in! She's on the waiting list. Poor thing! She was so upset. She works so hard and I'm thinking that if she didn't get in, what makes me think that I'll get in? I just started going back to school because I took a year off when I found out I was pregnant. Right now I've got a 2.7 GPA. She goes to the University of Hawaii and every semester they have about 200 applicants and they only take 45. Right now I'm doing my pre-reqs and I'm applying for the program next Fall, but I go to the community college and they get about 200 applicants for 30 openings!

Is there anything I can do to cheer her up? I feel so bad for her.

She's trying to be optimistic about it but I can tell that it's really bothering her.

Doesn't sound right to me. That 3.78 GPA should have put her darned near the top of the list!

She should see if they will tell her what she might do to improve her chances the next go 'round. Maybe there are additional courses she can take while she waits.

She should also apply to every program available to her.

There are some distance learning plans where you do the academics on line, with books, tapes, whatever, and then go to the campus several times to learn and demo clinicals.

It may not be the most traditional or even the best way, but an RN is an RN is an RN. You can have attended the best school in the world and still not be too hot, or you can go to a mediocre school and be the best nurse there is! It's very much what you put into it.

Maybe some of those other 170 students are interested in getting their heads together to come up with a solution.

Sometimes out of rejection comes the best stuff--phoenixes!

Good luck to you both!

I would look at all locations-even if you have to wait....maybe you can go work in a hospital and get some experience. Personally, I live in NC and have the same issues with getting in here/so, I am looking to move to VA a few hours away...because I found a private school that has no wait list and I can go part-time or full-time....Just look around at your options and it will all come together. I am now 36 yo and did not want to wait for two years. Just some thoughts for you/

Best:eek: hty

Hi Sabrina,

I'm on Oahu, too... I go to HPU. The reason that I chose HPU was because there is no wait list. I had a 3.88 GPA from Leeward CC, but would not have been considered at either UH or KCC because my dh is military... they tend to choose students who will stay on the island after graduation. (Even in KCC's information it states that military will be given no priority). I have waited too long to do this already, I didn't have time to languish on a list.

I am going to HPU on a half-price tuition waiver because I am in Phi Theta Kappa. With you sis's GPA that might be an option for her and it makes the HPU tuition comparable to UH's. Just another thought... and don't either of you give up! You are young and you do have time for things to work out... so keep trying!;)
