I was a pre-K teacher. I loved the kids, but I never felt complete. It did not seem like I was doing what I was supposed to do. I talked to some people about it and prayed about it and came up with nursing. I feel like nursing is for me, I even do really well in the prereqs. I am sure that now I have my niche in life

As you might be able to guess from my name, I was (er, am, see below) a Registered Veterinary Technician. I am the veterinary equivalent of an ADN in that I have an Assoc Degree and sat State and National cetrification boards. I'm in school now taking my prereqs with plans to start nursing school in Fall 2003.

Hi everyone! This is my first post so I hope I am doing it Ok :-)
This Is also my second career.I have spent the last 8 years as a hairstylist- Trainer. I finally decided what I wanted to do with my life, be a nurse. I have MANY nurses in my familly, and have always kicked around the idea. It finally kicked me back. I took the scariest step, going to school to get info, and it has been uphill from there. I am still doing my prereqs, I also work full time. I am excited and very scared, I start school full time in the fall.......eeeeek! I've been reading alot on this site for over 2 months and laughed so hard I hurt, and cried so hard I hurt. I feel like I even know some of you already. I think with all the support you guys give of yourselves to each other , I might make it. Thanks to all of you for the much needed info I have recieved so far!!!! Hidi74 :-)>

Actually, I'm a bit more fortunate than most as I work for a board certified specialty group (IM/Cardiology + Sx). Our techs get to do more than most. In my first week I was assisting in putting in PEG tubes, placing jugular catheters, passing nasal O2 caths, etc.

I am the overnight tech for both groups. I do all the critical care, alone, 9p-8a. Doc is on call but 30 mins away if she blows every speed limit and stoplight. A typical night has me with 2-3 critcal patients, 3-4 serious, 6-10 more "babysit" cases and often one "deathwatch" DNR case. I love the responsibility level of knowing that, if one of them crashes, its my skills that will save the life or lose it, nobody else.

But, yeah, its mostly the money. I'm near the "glass ceiling" as far as pay goes in this area unless I sit in the management chair. I had the offer at another clinic but turned it down so I can go to RN school.

BTW, would love to hear from you privately as I have a few questions about the vet to human med transition that might not be appropriate here.
