I have a question about Hep B vaccine

Hello all-

I was just accepted into the accelerated nursing program at UTHSC :wink2: I have all of the required immunizations except for Hep. B and even though I will get the first one right away I do believe it is a series. Can I not start until I have all of them? I am nervous and worried. I have not called the school yet as it is the weekend-just hoping to maybe get some answers here as to the experience of others-

Thanks!

i have a related post called Somebody answer: hep b series. search it and read ppl talk about it. ppl say that you can have some of your series done but need them complete before clinicals. and other issues. its very recent i posted it today.

Thanks for the info. I was born in 1980 and I know i did not get them. I think I will call the school tomorrow just to see. Thans for the info! While we are on the subject do you know where to get your Health Care Provider Basic Life Support CPR?

I would ask your school about the policy...in our program it's not the SCHOOL that will keep you from coming to clinical it's the FACILITY. All of our hospitals required that all rounds of Hep B have been received before we were allowed on the floor because it was a liability to them. Your BLS CPR course is provided through the American Heart Association. You should also check with your school to see if they provide this class for you at some point. You will probably be required to do this as well before starting clinicals. Fair warning..the BLS class is ALL day...hang in there!

I was able to start NS without the Hep B vaccine series being completed. I was also able to start clinicals as well; before the first clinical day I had to sign a waiver stating that I would not hold the NS or the hospital accountable should I pick up Hep B along the way.

However, school policies do vary, so the best place to get an answer really is your NS. And get your first Hep B shot ASAP--the sooner you start, the sooner you'll have them completed.
