How quick did you start clinical after starting school?(m)

  1. It seems like alot of you are starting clinical rather quickly. We started fundamentals (i'm in an LVN program) on Sept 1st but we don't start clinicals till Dec 12th. Seems like a LONG time to wait. How soon did you all start clinicals? I can't wait till we get to start!

first semester we had the first two clinicals in the lab watching videos and practicing the basics. The third week we had a little time in the lab and then clinical orientation at the agency. The fourth week we actually took care of patients.
Second semester we had the same thing.
This semester, 3rd, we had our first clincal patient on our first clinical day.

Ours is similiar, two weeks in the lab being checked off on basic skills. Third week on the floor picking out our pt.
Second semester we had clinicals the first week back.

We started clinicals the second week of 101! After an intense orientation during which we had to watch videos for and get passed off on handwashing, bed bath, occupied and unoccupied bed, body mechanics, temp, pulse, respiration and BP, we started research on our patient's condition(s) on Saturday and cared for them on Sunday. At that point we'd had lectures in safety, oxygenation and nutrition. And this is supposed to be a part time program. I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown! Amazingly we got everything done in time and had a pretty positive clinical experience.

Our 1st semester we had class for the 1st 12 weeks, clinicals for the last 4. By the time we started clinicals you had total care for the patients, including meds.

2nd - 4th semesters we have clinicals all 16 weeks of the semester, total patient care from day one.

We had our first clinical in the lab setting. It was on bathing and personal hygeine. The second week we started clinical on site. I am three weeks into the program and am doing total AM care, some charting, and other things. We do our skills in the lab first and our clinical assignments pick up those skills as we go. Next week we do vitals in the lab and on Thurs. pick it up on site. So every week builds on the past weeks. We have videos to watch, but they are to be done on our own time. I bought them and watch them at home (sometimes more then once). Some choose to watch them at the school. They weren't cheap, but I am glad to have them to look back on as I please.

We started our clinicals the second week of the semester. We do 8 weeks in the nursing home and 8 weeks in the hospital. The first week of clinicals we just introduced ourselves to our patient, but the second time we saw them, we were doing everything but passing meds. We had to be at the nursing home be 5:45 a.m. and finished working with patients by 11:15 then to post conference. I was exhausted! It's been a long time since I've worked in the nursing home! Needless to say, when I get done with school, I'll be looking for a job working p.m.s or nights! This early morning stuff is not my style!
