How many lost jobs due to nursing school?

I'm just wondering how many have lost their jobs because nursing school got to be too demanding? This morning I called in and told my boss I wasnt going to make it in today. I had a patient assessment due today at 4. I only work 3 days/week as is. I could tell he was upset from the way he snickered on the phone but what could I do. Who knows what will happen tomorrow when I go in. I often feel like I have to make a choice between work and school and sometimes family. I just wanted to know if I was the only one feeling this way.

I did not lose my job, but I knew it would be impossible for me to continue working. My school is an hour away from my home, and my job was another 30 minutes away, so I knew I could not swing it. Thankfully, I have a very supportive husband. I know it is tough, and I hope things work out for you.

I work for a plumbing company and my employer knows that I'm in nursing school and that I am eventually leaving but he insists on me sticking around until I graduate.

His wife on the other hand.....dislikes me because I am not in on Tuesdays because I have clinical from 830 AM to 4 PM. I do think she will eventually snap and just fire me, only time will tell. I am the sole provider too which makes the situation that much worse for me.

My wife and I decided that we wanted at least one parent home with our children to help with homework, projects, if they need someone to talk to, etc. We are able to swing it thus far but if I was to lose my job I am not sure what we'd do.

I just keep chugging along and take each day one at a time.

I did not lose my job but it got to be too much. I do private duty a couple days a month if I need a little spending money. I will be working at the hospital that I worked at before as a nurse. And the good thing is I did not lose any of my time. So when I go back to work there I will have 3 weeks of vacation a year instead of the typical 2 weeks for new hires.

I had to quit my job before I was let go. I called in several times during the spring semester this past year just to study for exams. I knew I would have to quit it eventually. I missed a clinical day because I could not take the day off from work. I tried weeks in advance to get the day off, too. My clinical prof. called me into her office and told me that missing a clinical rotation was an automatic fail. Fortunately, she allowed me to make up the day with another class. I knew at that point that school had to come first, and I would need to find a job that would be more flexible. I now work in a hospital as a student nurse technician a few days a week. I am grateful because in the process of learning practical skills, I am earning enough to pay (some of ) my bills. I am sure that regardless of what happens with your current job, you will be okay.

I'm sorry to hear about everyone's struggles. It think it's all worth it in the end.:nurse:

I happen to work for some great people in a small law firm. They knew when they hired me that I was working toward becoming a nurse. I only work part time when school is in session. When school is out, I work more than 40 hours to "catch up". Sometimes they want me to work more hours. I do the best I can to juggle both and should be able to hold down this job until I'm done with school. It's a win win for both of us.

To anyone working and in school: hang in there, it will be over with soon enough. Get some rest when you can and eat healthy - take care of your body so you can keep going and realize your goal.

i didn't lose my job because of school, but i did have to reduce my hours because of school.

school comes first, in my book. because my program is full time, i cut back from 40 hours to 20 hours the first semester of my 2 year program. second semester i had to cut down to 15 hours a week.

because my job was tied to the financial markets, i had to work during the day and it became too difficult to even work 15 hours a week. so, what i did was apply at the hospital in hope of a job where i could study during the downtime. this might be something you could consider.

i got a job as a ward clerk in the hospital. they are 12 hour shifts, but my boss knows that i'm in nursing school and is very flexible when it comes to school. no, i don't make as much money as i did before (less than half) but i'm still working and it's related to what i am studying.

you'll know what's best for you....nursing school is a temporary situation. some days it seems like it takes forever, other days it seems like it's going by in a flash.

you can do it! it's so worth it. i'll be done in may and you'll get through it, too!!!

Thanks to everyone for their words of encouragement. Its greatly appreciated. :nurse:

I also question whether it is a good idea to work during nursing school. I have a very supportive husband but feel like I should do my part as well. He says that school is my part and to worry about just that. I have decided not to work my first semester and then see how it goes from there. I want to be able to concentrate on school 110% and know that I will succeed. But like everything in life, it's one day at a time! :specs:

wow, this thread makes me feel so much better! I lost my job last week because I called in (again) when the workload got to be too much. My managers have been to college and I think they assume nursing school is the same, but having a degree in psych. this is WAY harder than even my toughest semester in undergrad!

I'm a single mom and I just can't juggle it all. We're fine living off of school loans, but I wish I would have realized I needed to cut back before I frustrated my managers and brought myself to my breaking point :uhoh3:

Me me me!!! I totally lost my job due to Nursing School and I have not even been offically accepted into the "program" yet.

We had lay offs... of course everyone knows I have been going to school all year. Everyone knows that I was hoping to get into the January program. Only pre-nursing students understand that this is not always a given fact that I'll get in.... but after three years there guess who got the pink slip? Yup!!! ME!!! Of course my boss has called me and asked me to come in already and fix what the new girl ( they hired her about three months ago cuz they lost someone else) messed up because she couldn't handle it stressed herself out and went home sick!!! LOL serves them right!!

how times did you call in sick before that? people are not terminated after 1 day of missing work.
