I'm starting an ADN program this fall and I was just curious to see how many hours other nursing students work while in school. Please, everybody answer so we can get a good picture of the amounts.

I plan on working 15-20 hours.

I currently work 2 shifts each weekend, but will go every other weekend once school starts back up in the fall. I don't mind working the hours, but w/ school in session, 5 days/week, I will need some weekend time at home. (This summer I am home full-time w/ my children, so work is a break for me :) .)

I hope you enjoy school!

I'm only taking 2 pre/co-reqs- 7 credit hours- but I will be working every other fri/sat and every sun.

I pull 40+ a week and do school at night and on weekends. Since I am in a night program, our classes are 3-4 nights per week and clinicals every other weekend. I work an odd shift so I can be up, in, and out early enough from work to allow a few hours of prep time prior to class and more afterward. I'm a glutton for punishment apparently but I require very little sleep so that's a plus in my favor...Also all of my pre-req's are completed so I only have Nursing 110 this fall...

I also worked 40 plus hours a week while in school. I was exhausted but we needed the income. I was still able to pull off A's and pass the NCLEX on the first try. It is not wise though to work so many hours. If you can afford it I would not work or only work part time.

I work 20 hours, all during the day and on weekdays, opposite when I am in school. I just picked up a per-diem tech job which will add about 4 - 8 hours/week. (one eve and one sat) Hopefully the per-diem will go regular, into a 24h/week position, and then I will drop the other job.

My ADN program suggests working no more than 20h/week during school.

I work approx. 32 hrs/wk :)

It's going to be 40-50 (again). No choice. Who's going to pay my bills?

My program tells you not to work at all, and they forbid your working a night shift before a clinical (which makes sense). I think it's a little presumptuous of them to tell you not to work at all considering they don't pay your bills for you. This is a two year ADN at a CC, but I digress, I plan to work two twelves on Friday and Saturday (in school Monday - Thursday) as a nurse aide *hopefully*.

I had been scheduled to work about 30 hours per week during NS but I realized quickly that that was not going to happen. Not because it absolutely couldn't be done but that it can not be done at this time in MY LIFE. So.............I quit my job, which wasn't giving me any good experience anyway, and my last day is Thursday. I have already applied for some on call positions at the local hospitals as well as a few really good full time opportunities at various healthcare facilities. I probably won't end up accepting those, I just applied because one said that they love nursing students and would fully train so I thought it may be worth it on account of all I'll learn!

If you can swing not working...........don't work. If you work, you will give up much of your life outside of nursing school (definitly if you work over 20 hours per week). A couple shifts per week I would think would be doable and will help pay the bills.:)
