Hi I was wondering how many clinical hours students are suppose to get in a BSN program? Mine doesn't seem to be enough? Are people mainly getting med/surg? Thanks

I think we get just over 1000 hours. We get med/surg, public health, L&D/Peds, Psych/Mental Health and our Final Practicum. I start in less than a month, so the hours are what I remember from the info session and clinicals are from my program sheet.

I am currently just over 900, not including the 5 week consolidation and 10 week preceptorship in my last year. It has been a great variety of Med/Surg and specialties.

We had nine total clinical days this semester. Five of those were scheduled on the medical-surgical unit, and they were probably five of the longest days of my life (see previous posts). Four others were elective and I went from ER to ICU on those. Last semester there were around eight I think (7-9).

Each clinical day began this semester at 0630 and ended at 1430. Subtract lunch and our meetings at the beginning and ending of the "shift," and we didn't really have many hours in. I'm not complaining though since I hate med-surg.

I could do the ER and ICU again though. But thus far, if you assume we had 17 total clinical days and were alotted eight hours each day then that's still only 136 hours.

Next semester we'll have two days of clinical with one split between OB and Peds and the other for the less structured public/community health course.

Just for comparison- My ADN program does right at 900 hours total over four semesters... only 120 hours for the first semester

Strong focus on med-surg, but I spent over 400 hours on telemetry units

I start an ASN program in a few weeks and we do about 900 clinical hours. I believe we do med/surg, maternal, neonate, psych, and community health.

In my BSN program we do over 1500 hours, with the last 600 being a 6 month preceptorship.

Over the course of 4 years we end up with over 1600 hours. First year is 105 in med/surg and then in the fourth year we get 120 hours of consolidation and close to 400 as transition to independent practice. We also do community, mental health, L&D placements

I am in an accelerated program for those with a previous bachelor's degree or an associate's degree in any field, and we do ~750 over four semesters.

Could everyone pls share what schools they are at?

Im in my 3rd year, and I have done over 1000 hours... still have psych, homecare, palliative/medical, public health and preceptorship to go.. (4 more semesters worth..)

PLUS, ESN hours are about 400 hours (but thats not part of my BSN program)

OH, and I am from Vancouver, BC. I go to the University of the Fraser Valley. I believe BCIT has the highest amount of hours in a BC nursing school and then UFV is to follow (where I go), but since the fast track 3 year programs have come out I am pretty sure they are about equal by now.
