HELP: How Extensive Are Hiring Background Checks?

Students General Students

Published

So, I'm a Nursing Student and recently in addition to my waitressing job, I started doing like camgirl stuff online. Do you think I could be fired as a RN in the future? Or it could come up in a background check and hinder my employment majorly? I've made over $400 on the camming website so I'm required to file taxes eventually and I guess I'm just scared I could lose my RN license one day. I just don't want anything to jeopardize my dream but I also would like to be able to stay in school so I can reach it. I realize now I jumped into this head first before really thinking of the consequences, but now I need to decide to continue doing it or stopping.

I guess any general advice would be wonderful to ease (or fuel) my anxiety. Thank you!

If I had a clue what "doing like camgirl stuff online" actually meant, maybe I could help :)

Guessing it isn't illegal, as you are paying taxes....but if it's something that will violate a morals clause at some point, you already know the answer, yes?

Likely won't get you fired- but it probably will keep you from getting hired. Quit now - minimize damage to your career.

For what it's worth, nearly every (every?) BON has some sort of "moral turpitude" rule for nursing licensure. I have no idea how rigidly these are defined or enforced, but I sure would not want to have to explain a "camgirl stuff" sideline to a BON to which I applied for licensure. Of course, there is no guarantee a BON (or potential employer) would find out, but, as they say, the Internet is forever, and one never knows. I can't really see anything good coming out of this for you, now or in the future.

camgirl stuff = camming online basically performing a live sex show...but also just talking to people for money while I'm naked. just fyi, but also for tax purposes I'm an independent contractor so unless they dig into it...it won't show up?

According to Moral Turpitude: When Nurses Do Things That Are Intentionally Evil - Articles Archive - Working Nurse l Nursing Jobs, RN Career Advice in Los Angeles OC Inland Empire, they have to deem it either "vileness, intentional violence, deceit, fraud or dishonesty of a high degree. It is considered intentionally evil." and it seems to only refer to illegal activity, which is not what I am doing. Camming is completely legal and a valid way of making money.

My thought is how are you going to deal with a professor, classmate, patient, coworker, employer, etc. whenever they recognize you?

Back ground checks look at criminal activity. i don't think virtual online stripper will show. I doubt you have anything to worry about. If your state BoN has nothing on a moral/decency clause you should be fine. Employers are a different story. They dig around in everything.

Employers and some schools regularly do an internet search on people who want to be involved with them. If a search on your name and any variation of it leads to you camgirl site, you could be in trouble. Check to see if you can find anything.

I just did a search on the name you use here. You should too.

Anxiety from this can be decreased to Zero if you contact your state BON and find out the truth. You did not break the law so I do not see how it would affect your nursing license. I know in California there was a nurse who had made adult movies and she was still working. Now the HOSPITAL you work for can say they do not want you working there. They can fire you for pretty much anything. Avoidant traits are not good for anxiety. Go get the bottom line then move on. I would suggest you stop doing it and focus on school. You are entering a professional field where you need to conduct yourself as such.

If they an individual had to confidence to tell me tht they recognize me from a cam-website than I would probably explain to them I was in college/needed money to pay for Nursing school... it does not reflect my nursing ability or intelligence. Basically tell them to be professional and grow up and that it's in the past. I'm not going to cam while I'm an RN.
