Help with an Ethics Topic!

  1. 0
    Hey guys...
I have to do a research paper in ethics on an article that talks about an ethical issue. I don't want to do something that has been done over and over (ex: stem cell research or T. Shrivo's case). Anyone ever come across a good ethical article?

    Thanks,
    Tif

I'm doing a paper for Bioethics right now, and chose this:

    http://www.unos.org/resources/bioethics.asp?index=2

It's about prisoners and organ donation (not should prisoners be able to donate to reduce their sentence, which is a hot topic, but prisoners rights to get an organ compared to someone not in prison).

I wanted to do something besides the usual also: abortion, Terri Schaivo, stem cell research, euthanasia, etc.

I did this and got an A++, How to get away with pregnancy discrimination in the state of Massachusstetts. If you are a nonprofit org in Mass you are seen as the equivalent of a fraternity and can get rid of anyone for any reason.

One of the really great topics a fellow student picked was the use of placebos.

How about whether or not alcoholics deserve liver transplants, or an overweight person deserves a heart transplant, etc. We debated this last semester and it was very interesting how far you could take it. This presumes that the reason for the liver transplant is due to alcoholic cirrhosis or a heart transplant needed due to coronary artery disease r/t obesity, and not because of an unrelated reason. I don't have any articles though, sorry. Just a suggestion.

    Nurse Karen,
Thanks for all the great links! No matter what thread I am in, you always have a link for such great professional articles! As a student in a masters of nursing program we are always being encouraged to read/find nursing reasearch! Do you reasearch for your career? Are you in academia? Anyway, thanks again

I dont have an article but my prof. roles and issues class recently did an ethics paper...we had two topics...slow code/no code and another where a woman from a diff culture (it was against her beliefs to have a csection) was in active labor...she did not want a csection and would not agree to one even though HER and HER BABY would DIE without it..the baby was turned sideways and even though the staff explained to her that there was no way to "turn the baby" the patient thought there was...she would not sign the consent form....the dr. took her against her will and performed the csection...would you have participated or not....

i know i dont have an article or anything but i thought it was still interesting...such a dilemma!! I hope I never have to come across something like that...did you kow that you can be sued for malpractice 21 years after an incident like the one i mentioned above (i believe that is bc its is OB..not sure if its all specialties are like that)?

Glad you find the links I post helpful. After 25 years as staff RN, am Manager in a homecare agency. Got turned onto reading at a young age and will often click on a link to see were it leads. Had wonderful RN advocatesin college and at first hospital employed--RN 's ran the show and kept hospital alive, so learned to be an advocate.
Having professional info helps to back up the WHO, WHAT, HOW, WHY and the reason need to change.

Kids just tell me it's cause I love to tell everybody what to do

I just did a paper on nurse-patient boundaries in mental health - pm me if you'd like to read it. It's not technically an ethics paper, but you might find some useful references in it.
