I have a meeting with the Dean again next week in regards to "academic dishonesty" and was advised to go speak with a Student Advocate (appointment next week). What I did was I tried to sign up to the Instructors online textbook resource section for practice questions and study material instead of under the Student section. So after I submitted my registration for approval they called the school like 3 days later to check if I was in deed an instructor and thats when I got a phone call from the dean. And now I have to go in for a hearing next week and may charge me with cheating and academic dishonesty. The thing is I never got access to the site anyway so was no benefit to me. All I wanted was to do practice questions. What do you guys think I should do? How do i prepare my case?

Did you sign up as an instructor knowlingly? If yes, not much you can do. That's tantamount to cheating.

yeh i signed up there because the student site was of no help and use. No practice questions or anythng usefull.

Well, then what you did is similar to looking in the teacher's textbook instead of your own. Although I understand your intention, your action was indeed academic dishonesty.

Isnt this the same as obtaining previous years exams from other students and studying those? It's just as bad. What are the consequences? possibility for expulsion or suspension?

I have no idea what the consequences would be, since I don't know your school's policies. It could be either of those, it could be neither.

Studying past students' exams is not the same as looking at the teacher's stuff. Look at it this way: which is worse, studying a past exam that has been graded, or getting the teacher's copy?

i understand but the questions are from the same test bank of thousands of questions. It would just help with studying i think, that is why i signed up. But I guess i shouldnt of tried.

That's not the point. The point is that you are a student and you accessed a site meant only for instructors. You can justify this for as long as you want, but the bottom line is that you attempted to do something that is considered cheating.

so what is the best thing to do in this case? i dont want to get an F in the course or expelled. I would understand they did that if I was able to get full access to the instructor section, but i didnt.

How much access you got doesn't matter. The fact that you did get access does. If you were to steal a test but later say "But I didn't even look at it", that would not help you much. I don't know what would be the best thing to do because that all depends on your school's policies, but most definitely the student advocate is the person to ask.

ok thank you so much! i appreciate it. The meeting is booked with the student advocate next week.
