LOL. I bet that title caught you off guard. I know I know ... everybody here is in nursing school. :jester: What I'm after is did somebody recommend you to go into nursing? If yes, who did and why? If you decided on your own - Why? Why did you chose nursing as your career?

I can remember watching my mom getting ready in her whites for work when I was a little girl. She was an OR nurse. Whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said a nurse!! Upon graduating high school I realized I didn't have the drive for school even though I wanted to be a nurse....So I joined the Army and became a military police officer. I know, total career change. So here I am, 36 years old beginning nursing school finally in five days. My mother passed away two weeks ago and I feel lucky that she got to see me accepted into the nursing program. She always called me her "little nurse". I just hope I make her proud.

Growing up I always wanted to have a career that involved people.. I considered a path in psychology but the amount of schooling required to be where I wanted to start, psychiatrist, was too involved for consideration at my young age . My first semester at college (summer) I was actually majoring in accounting, but with some thought I realized I could never sit behind a desk all day long "playing with numbers." I was fortunate enough to have met a male nurse amongst all the college mayhem, and this is where the idea of nursing came to my mind. He seemed to like his career and it made me realize that nursing would incorporate my desire to be with people for a living. Before the semester even ended I had switched my major to Nursing and the rest is history..

She always called me her "little nurse". I just hope I make her proud.

Speaking as a mom, I'm pretty sure you already have!

Best wishes.

In 5th or 6th grade, can't remember which I read the book Nurses Who Led The Way. From that point I knew I wanted to be a nurse. The first person that ask me, what I wanted to be when I grew up was the principle of my elementary school. I explained I wanted to be a Nurse. He encouraged me if that was what I wanted to do I should work toward it. It has been the focus of my entire growing to go to Nursing school. Along the way I've had encouragement from others to go to school and study nursing. When I trained to be a CNA the instructor said to me go to nursing school. I am finally here at the end of my first week. While I feel a little overwhelmed, there is also an exhilaration to finally be doing what I know I was made to do. Break is over.

I just started my first semester of nursing school two weeks ago. I am in a ADN program and then I will enter an RN to MSN program. My mother is a nurse....she has been my entire life....she works once a week now, but it keeps her busy. I thought about nursing school on and off for a while, but I always found a reason not to take the leap and go for it. Me and my mother were involved in a car accident that almost ended my life 15 years ago. The accident occurred two weeks before I would have started my junior year in college(my first undergrad). I suffered a TBI....on paper I should not be alive, but the Lord had other plans! In rehab, I was told by therapists and some nurses that I should go to school to be a nurse or a therapist....at the time I remember thinking, are you crazy?! I just wanted to graduate from college and nursing seem like more than I could handle! In 2008, I married a Neurologist....he had just completed residency and I really began to feel the Lord telling me that we could help others in their need together(through missions and free clinics...I think the need is only going to get bigger) if I went to Nursing school. I finally decided to listen to Him! With the Lord and my husband's help, I will graduate December 2015! I'm really excited and a lot scared, b/c I turned 37 in November, so I can't afford to have to repeat semesters....I'm determined though!! :)

I will never forget it. I was leaning against the wall in the hallway of the eye clinic I worked in. A doctor and I were waiting for a patient to arrive I think. I remember him saying, "So have you ever thought about going into nursing? You like working with patients, etc. ....." I had started taking a few pre-reqs some years before (to eventually go to nursing school) but stopped after having my son who was 3 1/2 at the time of this conversation. Life has a way of putting your dreams on hold sometimes. Within two weeks of our talk I had toured my local university, given my 2 week notice and registered to go to school full time.

My mother recommended it to me. I went to my mother & father's work place, when I was really young, where there were scientists/researchers. I thought it was a cool profession where you could make potions and find cure for diseases. One of the scientists told my mother "If I didn't become a scientist, I would have been a nurse. It is a wonderful profession!" I was inspired. If the scientist really wanted to do nursing instead of researching, it had to be something really amazing! After that day, I started to pursue my dream of being a nurse. There was a identity crisis here and there, during high school, if I really wanted to become a nurse. Once I started the nursing school pre-reqs and experienced a little bit of what nursing would be, I loved it. I cannot see myself doing any other profession. I got accepted to nursing school and will be starting soon!

When I was younger, I never wanted to be a nurse, I wanted to be everything BUT a nurse. I come from a family full of nurses; even the guys in my family are nurses that it was expected that I would "want" to become a nurse too. Instead, I wanted to be a teacher, a fashion designer, an entrepeneur, and even a scientist at one point. But I was just always stuck with some dead end job because I never really cared for school either. It was not until I had a baby I realized it wasn't about me anymore. I had to take action and pursue in a career that will help me provide for my baby, and nursing had all the green lights! My son became my prime motivator.
