Has anyone ever formed a study group for the purpose of NCLEX Prep only. The reason why I ask is because one of the nursing instructors brought up an interesting proposal today and my classmates and I thought it was a very interesting proposal that we are going to take seriously.

My school is trying to raise their NCLEX pass rate first time around. Right now it is about an 89 percent well they want to get that well into the 90s.

The instructor has said that we should consider next year from August 2002-May 2003 every friday having a study group for NCLEX purposes but it will be different from any other study group. What we will do is the content that we are weak on we would go back through and review it and the instructors will give worksheets on that particular content and questions. We would meet every friday after class for about 3 hours until we graduate and it is optional. Instructors will take turns making themselves available to help us out if we need it but we are to guide this ourselves knowing that there will be instructors available.

I am so excited about that. I think it is wonderful and it would be interesting to see what happens to the NCLEX rates at my school for my class since my class will be the first to do this. Practically all the students think it is a good idea too and many are serious and very scared about the NCLEX and we do not even graduate for another year.

Tonya, I think that's a great idea, I think we may do something like that next year as well. Especially since I got everyone thinking about how to read the questions. (see NCLEX quiz thread) I would recommend getting some NCLEX prep books, they explain the test taking stratagies very well, plus you could each get different books & share the info. I am very impressed with the Kaplan book for the strategies part, and Saunders Comprehensive 2nd Ed. review for content. If you are interested in the ISBN's for these books just let me know. I wouldn't use any books older than 2001, there are about 10 different books with CD's that fit that criteria. Good luck.

Sandra, this is strange but we have the exact same two books. I am kicking myself for not reading the kaplan one along time ago. Because I have had it for 6 months now but just now reading through it. It helped me a great deal the last time.

In fact my instructor loves it and thinks it is wonderful because she thinks the most common reason why students fail tests including the NCLEX is not just because students may not know the info because that is not true in all cases. It is just that some do not know how to read the question and therefore answer it.

Saunders is good and I love the disc that comes with it.

I also have Mosby and Lippincott. This summer the journey begins for me. I am going to start this summer with things I still feel shaky on. I am going to set up a plan with my advisor. I do not have any summer classes to take so I am going to do that this summer.

That way next summer I can pass NCLEX the first go around if not then it is not the end of the world but it will be nice to pass the first time.

My program has a two semester hour class devoted to NCLEX prep. It's purely elective, meant to be taken in your last semester, and (from what I have heard) covers not only material but also study tips.

The class uses a standard study aid book (surely it's Kaplan) as a diagnostic tool, then the instructor covers problem areas. It lasts for a full term and is supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. :)

Do I need to mention that I definitely plan on taking it? LOL

Our school had us take the Mosby's RN assess test in December Sr. year. If you didn't make a minimum score, you were required to take a review class such as the one you describe. I didn't take the class, but I think it's great, especially if you can share around question books and software.

My experience is that NCLEX throws in a lot of different concepts in one question: ie it could be a question about a child needing medication. So its really a question regarding: Pediatrics/pharmacology/ and usually one other aspect thrown in, like educating the mother. On most school tests, just one concept is tested per question. I would say go for it, especially if you aren't a multiple choice goddess, it can only help.
